Whose Language, Whose Standards? Rethinking Assessment in Multilingual Classrooms

Are our classroom assessments truly measuring what multilingual learners know and can do, or do they sometimes privilege conformity to a particular variety or standard of English?

Drawing on research, teaching experiences, and diverse educational contexts, this panel discussion examines the assumptions and standards that shape classroom assessment practices. It invites educators to reflect on what is being assessed, whose linguistic practices are privileged, and how assessment decisions affect learners.

The discussion does not seek to abandon standards but to explore how assessment can become more inclusive, equitable, and responsive to multilingual learners while remaining aligned with intended learning outcomes.

LOOK: PUBLIC LECTUREOF PROFESSOR DINAH T. ROMA

Amid ecological crises, political uncertainties, and rapid technological change, this lecture explores the role of writing and literature in bearing witness to loss, cultivating ecological awareness, and imagining possible futures. Drawing on creative writing and the environmental humanities, it considers the enduring significance of human imagination in an age when artificial intelligence challenges established notions of language, creativity, and authorship.

Professor Dinah Roma is a poet, scholar, and humanities advocate whose literary and academic work spans poetry, creative nonfiction and the environmental humanities. She is the recipient of four National Book Awards and the Gawad Francisco Balagtas Lifetime Achievement Award for Poetry in English. She has represented the Philippines at international literary festivals and events and has received fellowships from the Japan Foundation and the National University of Singapore's Asia Research Institute. Most recently, as Fulbright/PAEF Visiting Scholar hosted by Old Dominion University, she conducted research in the Environmental Humanities โ€” an area that has become increasingly central to her literary and scholarly pursuits. She is a University Fellow and Full Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at De La Salle University, where she also serves as editor-in-chief of AKDA: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, and Performance.
