Held virtually from May 21โ23, 2026, the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences of Visayas State University Tolosa conducted a CPD-accredited seminar-training with a maximum of 8 points for Registered Fisheries Professionals entitled, โ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ฅ๐ ๐

The three-day seminar-training opened with welcome remarks and messages from representatives of the university, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Board of Fisheries.
Visayas State University Chancellor Dr. Quenstein D. Lauzon underscored the importance of responsible fisheries practices in achieving food production goals without compromising aquatic ecosystems, while VSU President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes expressed gratitude to participants for engaging in the CPD training initiative.
BFAR Eastern Visayas Regional Director Dominador Maputol encouraged continuous learning and knowledge-sharing, emphasizing that educated practitioners become โliving repositories of wisdomโ for communities.
Meanwhile, VSU Tolosa Quality Assurance Office Head Dr. Jessielyn M. Abordo recognized the event as a platform for meaningful discussions and professional learning, and PRC Board of Fisheries Chairperson Dr. Westly R. Rosario reflected on his personal experiences in fisheries, stressing the enduring importance of responsible resource utilization.
The first talk was delivered by ๐๐ซ. ๐๐ข๐ณ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ง ๐. ๐๐จ๐ง๐ณ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ, Head of DFish and Dean of FFAS, where she presented the topic โStatus of Capture Fisheries in the Philippines,โ providing a comprehensive overview of the current conditions and key drivers shaping the sector. She highlighted the countryโs production status alongside persistent challenges in capture fisheries, including resource depletion, overfishing pressures, and environmental and socio-economic factors affecting sustainability.
๐๐ซ. ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐. ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฆ๐๐ฒ๐, Senior Aquaculturist of BFAR Eastern Visayas, presented the topic โRegulations Governing the Use of Fishing Gears and Vessels in the Philippines,โ where the regulations governing the use of fishing gears and vessels in the Philippines, focusing on existing national policies and legal frameworks that guide sustainable fisheries management was comprehensively presented. He also discussed common violations and regulatory gaps, emphasizing that non-compliance with licensing requirements, gear restrictions, and vessel operation standards remains a frequent cause of apprehension among individuals engaged in fishing activities.
๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐. ๐๐ซ๐จ๐. ๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐๐ง ๐. ๐๐๐ซ๐ซ๐จ, Director for Academic Affairs of VSU Tolosa, presented the topic โFishing Gear Design and Practices: Tool in Achieving Sustainable Fisheries in FMAs,โ where she provided an overview of current fisheries management procedures and policies in the country and how these have evolved over time. Furthermore, she emphasized the role of appropriate gear design and responsible fishing practices in supporting sustainable fisheries management within Fisheries Management Areas.
Three topics were also delivered on the second day of the seminar-training.
๐๐ซ. ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ง๐๐ซ๐จ ๐๐๐๐ซ, Faculty Research from the University of the Philippines Visayas, presented the topic entitled, โFisheries Biodiversity Assessment: Methods and Approaches for Onboard and Landing Site Surveysโ. Here, he discussed fisheries biodiversity assessment as a foundation for responsible and sustainable fisheries management, emphasizing that it goes beyond species identification to include fish abundance, habitats, fishing activities, and environmental conditions. He highlighted the complementary use of onboard and landing site surveys, noting that integrating both approaches improves data reliability for evidence-based fisheries decision-making.
๐๐ซ. ๐๐ข๐ณ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ง ๐. ๐๐จ๐ง๐ณ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ presented another topic entitled, โFishing Gear Modification as a Potential Fisheries Management Measure for Sustainable Blue Swimming Crab Fisheryโ. Her presentation focused on fishing gear modification as a management strategy for the sustainable Blue Swimming Crab fishery, highlighting issues of juvenile catch and bycatch in current fishing gears. She emphasized that improvements such as optimal mesh size and the use of escape gaps in crab pots can reduce unwanted catch while maintaining the harvest of marketable crabs, supporting both conservation and fisher livelihoods.
๐๐ซ. ๐๐จ๐ก๐ง ๐๐ก๐๐จ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ณ, Researcher from the Capiz State University- Dayao, presented the topic โEffect of Pot Designs on Crab Catchability and Selectivity,โ where he discussed on crab pot design and its influence on catchability and selectivity, focusing on how structural variations affect fishing efficiency. He reported that rectangular pots with side entrances demonstrated higher catch rates and improved performance, underscoring the role of gear design in promoting more efficient and sustainable crab fishing practices.
๐๐ซ. ๐๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ, Faculty Researcher of Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology, started the third day as he presented the topic โBeach Seine and Filter Net Fishing Operations in the Philippines,โ where he provided a technical overview and description of beach seine and filter nets as commonly used fishing gears in various fishing communities across the country. His discussion also highlighted their practical applications in capturing different fisheries species and their relevance to local fishing operations.

๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ง๐๐๐ณ, Faculty Researcher of Mariano Marcos State University, presented the topic โFishing Gear Modification Based on Fish Visual Cues and Spectral Sensitivity,โ where he provided an overview of how biological factors influence fishing efficiency. His discussion highlighted how the color, size, and material of fishing gear components such as lures can affect fish behavior and capture success, including target species like octopus.
The three-day CPD seminar-training ended with messages of gratitude delivered by Instr. Chrizhane G. Domingo (Department PRC-CPD Focal Person) which was followed by Dr. Rizalyn P. Gonzalesโ closing message.
In their messages, they expressed gratitude to everyone, particularly the organizers and invited speakers, for their compliance and cooperation despite the series of comments and recommendations provided by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), which led to the adjustment of the CPD training schedule from its originally planned date in December 2025 to May 2026.
They also emphasized that strong commitment and sustained partnerships among institutions create meaningful impact and foster continuous learning across different sectors and stakeholders.
