SCHOOL-BASED ORAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND SCREENING CAMP FOR DEAF STUDENTS AT CED

Health promotion and dental wellness initiatives are fundamental to enhancing the overall well-being and quality of life of especially-abled and underserved populations. In resource-limited settings, priority should be given to preventive and educational healthcare services for these vulnerable groups. Physical or sensory impairments may hinder effective self-care practices, thereby elevating the risk of systemic and dental diseases. Consequently, the adoption of targeted, evidence-based preventive approaches is essential to preserve both general and dental health.
In this context, a free dental check-up and interactive oral health awareness session was organized on 3rd March 2026 at CED (Center of Excellence for The Deaf). CSP team actively participated in this community outreach activity. The team was supervised by Assistant Prof. Dr. Maria Moin (Head of Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry), Dr. Fatima Tasleem and Dr. Tabinda Waqar (Lecturers).
The BUDC team reached the school at 9:30 AM and was warmly received by the school administration. The target population included deaf children between the ages of 10 to 17 years. Oral examinations were conducted in a designated hall by HOD. Oral hygiene–related information was obtained and documented using a structured proforma. The dental team maintained a high standard of professionalism and strictly adhered to sterilization and cross-infection control protocols throughout the activity.
As part of the awareness session, educational videos focusing on proper tooth brushing techniques, the importance of oral hygiene, and prevention of common dental diseases were shown to the deaf children using visual aids to ensure better understanding. The session was designed to be interactive and visually engaging to meet their specific communication needs.
This outreach visit was also linked with an interdepartmental research initiative, and relevant data were collected concerning the specified research objectives.
The oral health status of the examined children indicated a significant need for preventive and educational interventions. Due to the large number of students, a separate comprehensive oral health education session was planned for a subsequent visit. Identified dental problems were recorded and communicated to parents through written notes in the students’ diaries for further follow-up and necessary treatment.
