The Faculty, Staff and Students of the Department of Archaeology express deep sorrow at the passing of Professor Katsumi Tanabe, a distinguished scholar of Gandhāran art and archaeology, who passed away on Sunday, 19 April 2026. Professor Tanabe was a Japanese international scholar who pursued his Maters studies at the Department of Archaeology, University of Peshawar in the 1960s, where he graduated as a gold medalist. He maintained a lifelong association with the department and his pioneering scholarship on the Buddhist art of Gandhāra and Kushan iconography earned him global recognition. His passing is not only a loss to his academic family but a mutual and irreparable loss to the fraternity of archaeology across the world.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, students, and colleagues.
