Ocean Connections: reflecting on a transdisciplinary art project employing eco-aesthetic perspectives
📅 June 8
🕡 18:30
📍 Room 230, ISCAP – P.PORTO
Attendance is free.
From our position as humans, we can make use of artistic, cultural and technological practices to discover what is not sensuously attainable to us in our environment.
Ocean Connections, a two-channel video installation in collaboration with scientists Guillermo Garcia-Sanchez and Evangelos Voukouvalas, utilizes mathematical modelling of ocean movements through the water body and the historical development of biodiversity in the Oslofjord along with stories of depositories and microorganisms.
Kristin Bergaust is an artist, researcher and curating organizer, the vice-dean of research and professor of contemporary art at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design in OsloMet, in Oslo, Norway.
She investigates current conditions through feminist and transcultural perspectives, fed by cultural history, scientific data and other narratives while employing artistic, performative, and technological practices. This is visible in her curatorial and artistic project Oslofjord Ecologies for Creative Europe from 2016. In the collective curatorial and artistic endeavor Oslofjord Triennial, the engagement for the Oslofjord were put to curatorial practice on an off-grid island Lågøya in August 2024 and continues with an aim to build up to another edition in the central Oslo harbour area in 2027.

Released number 14, 2026, of E-REI – E-Journal of Intercultural Studies (Scopus)

Now in its 14th consecutive year of publication, E-REI – E-Journal of Intercultural Studies (SCOPUS), published by the Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) at ISCAP – P.PORTO, continues to establish itself as a space for critical thinking, academic rigour, and global dialogue.
Featuring 25 articles, 1 book review, and 1 postgraduate research paper, the 2026 issue brings together contributions from 11 countries, reflecting the diversity and complexity of the contemporary world—from Portugal and Spain to Italy and Brazil, from Ukraine to Turkey, and including Morocco, India, Malaysia, and China, among other academic and cultural contexts.
In this issue, E-REI – E-Journal of Intercultural Studies further consolidates its role as a transnational platform for cutting-edge research in the fields of cultural studies, communication, translation, media, education, and society. Its thematic diversity is matched by a plurality of methodologies – from qualitative analysis to discourse critique, from case studies to empirical research – reflecting a field in constant reinvention and deeply grounded in present-day dynamics.
This volume stands out for the timeliness of its themes, among which the following are particularly prominent: digital media and global cultures, including social media, streaming, advertising, and audiovisual production from an intercultural perspective; translation, language, and power, with particular attention to tensions between human mediation and artificial intelligence; gender, visibility, and representation, focusing on media discourses, contemporary feminisms, and emerging cultural practices; memory, identity, and decoloniality, exploring archives, cultural heritage, and postcolonial dynamics; interculturality and education, offering innovative perspectives on learning, technology-mediated communication, and multilingual contexts; sustainability, tourism, and global citizenship, articulating social, cultural, and economic practices; and art, literature, and cinema as forms of resistance, interpretation, and social transformation.

CEI & SHiFT COST Action Exhibition “Art & Science within Ecologies of Relations”, June ’26, P.PORTO Cultural Center
The Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) at ISCAP–P.PORTO invites the community to the exhibition “Art & Science within Ecologies of Relations”, an event marking the closing of COST Action CA21162 – Social Sciences and Humanities for Transformation and Climate Resilience, supported by COST – European Cooperation in Science and Technology.
Opening on June 3, 2026, at 6:00 PM, at the P.PORTO Cultural Center, the exhibition proposes a journey through the complex relationships between humans and Nature. Installation, sculpture, sound, photography, and painting converge to create an environment where knowledge is felt, heard and questioned.
Here, artistic research engages directly with science to explore urgent themes: transformation, regeneration, sustainability, and new experimental methodologies. Through art-science approaches and embodied learning, the exhibition invites visitors to go beyond passive observation: it invites them to experience, reflect, and participate.
Featuring works by Camila Almeida, Eldar Tagi, Gustavo Ludgero, José Carlos Sarmento, Kristin Bergaust, Lena Pozdnyakova, Luis Probala, Maíra Mafra and Mirella Frangella, this gathering brings together diverse voices within a global creative ecosystem where disciplinary boundaries dissolve. The exhibition runs until June 30, 2026.
As the organizing institution, CEI reinforces its commitment to building international networks of excellence, fostering dialogue between academia, art, culture, and society. This event is both a point of arrival and a point of departure, a synthesis of European collaborations and an open invitation to create new connections.
“Art & Science within Ecologies of Relations” is not just an exhibition; it is a living territory where art, science, and critical thinking intersect.
