The International Urban Planning and Environment Association (IUPEA) is pleased to announce its 12th Symposium on Urban Planning and Environment (UPE 12) that will take place on May 31 - June 3, 2016 in Lisbon, Portugal. The Symposium will be hosted and organized by the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT) and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), both from the University of Lisbon (ULis
boa), in association with IUPEA. The UPE 12 Symposium will be preceded by the 1st Lusophone Symposium on Urban Planning and Environment (31 May 2016), coordinated by IGOT / IST - ULisboa. The central theme of the UPE 12 Symposium focuses on the need for greater effort to create more inclusive and healthy cities, greener and sustainable, more innovative and intelligent, with greater support to leisure and tourism, economically more robust and providers of more and better jobs, with inclusive governance models, opening a new era where cities are more livable, efficient, competitive, attractive, equitable and resilient. The main purpose of the event is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for debate on the complex issues of urban planning and environment, welcoming the contributions of those who work with new approaches, concepts, methods and guidelines or case study applications and integrative reviews, exploring theoretical and empirical aspects. The UPE 12 Symposium unfolds around the theme “CITIES FOR US: engaging communities and citizens for sustainable development”, having as specific tracks:

T02 // GREEN AND SUSTAINABILITY: towards effective cities;
T03 // INNOVATION AND INTELLIGENCE: towards competitive cities;
T04 // LEISURE AND TOURISM: towards attractive cities;
T05 // GOVERNANCE AND POLICIES: towards learning cities;
T06 // ECONOMY AND JOBS: towards equitable cities;
The 1st Lusophone Symposium in Urban Planning and Environment will be a space for sharing knowledge and discussion of the issues and dynamics of urban development in Portuguese speaking countries. The discussion will be focused on the following tracks:
LS01 // Urban Planning for sustainable development in lusophone contexts;
LS02 // Multilevel governance experiences for sustainable urban and environmental development. We invite researchers from around the world to submit abstracts and contribute to the discussions that will take place at the UPE 12 Symposium.
