🇩🇰 In Denmark, sustainability is more than a matter of policy, it’s a daily way of life.

For National University of Singapore, College of Humanities and Sciences Life Sciences student Myra Khoo, an exchange at the University of Copenhagen profoundly reshaped her view on environmental stewardship.

🚴 From interdisciplinary courses in ecological economics to witnessing how local communities interact and how resources are managed, Myra experienced sustainability as a lived experience firsthand.

“Taking courses across different departments gave me a deeper appreciation of how various disciplines advance environmental conservation through distinct priorities,” she says.

⛰️ Beyond the classroom, she immersed herself in local culture through student activities, outdoor countryside hikes and volunteering at a local soup kitchen 🍲.

“Living in Copenhagen introduced me to new ways of thinking about sustainable living, both literally and figuratively,” says Myra.

What does it really take for seafood to travel from ocean to plate?

🐟 From fisheries and factory lines to wholesale markets, a summer field experience to Hakodate gave students a rare behind-the-scenes look into the complex seafood supply chain and the vital role of food scientists in safeguarding food quality.

“As Singaporeans, we often take seafood availability for granted,” says National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science student Roxane Choo. “This programme helped us recognise the tremendous effort and coordination required to make these products readily accessible in local markets.”

🍱 Combining hands-on industry exposure with local cultural immersion, the programme left a lasting impression on our students 📝

“In just five days, more than just a study trip, this programme gave me unforgettable experiences, new friendships and a deeper appreciation of the processes behind every seafood product,” says Roxane.

One programme. Two countries. Four degrees.

👩‍💻 Meet Lim See Min of NUS Physics, a student in the NUS-French Double Degree Programme (FDDP) École Polytechnique.

To See Min, choosing the FDDP was about more than just burnishing her academic credentials. The FDDP presents a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience life in Paris while facing up to unexpected challenges along the way.

🇫🇷 Being immersed in the French environment gave her insights into an entirely unfamiliar academic environment and culture. What stood out particularly for her were the different scientific terminologies – even though the underlying science is consistent.

💬 “For example, the cross product is denoted with a wedge ∧ (and called a 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑖𝑡 𝑣𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑙) instead of a cross ×,” she says.

Her time in France has broadened her worldview and strengthened her confidence in navigating an increasingly interconnected world.
“Living abroad teaches me things no classroom can,” she says. 🌎

☕ Did you know: The coffee grounds from your daily cup of brew can be turned into bespoke homewares and items?

At Brambe, a design and craft studio, NUS Bachelor of Environmental Studies - BES' Amanda Tay brings new life into commonly discarded materials and transforms them into lovely custom homewares and items.

This was a result of combining her two passions 🤝:
🍃 Sustainability and 🎨 artistry.

Together with her now partner and fellow NUS alumnus, she creates stunning upcycled bespoke pieces found in homes and as corporate gifts in partnership with Alibaba, Spotify and Coachtopia.

“It’s not glamorous,” she admitted. “We have to clean the waste, process it, test it and experiment a lot.”

One thing’s for sure: Amanda’s work proves that sustainability and creativity can go hand in hand, bringing the phrase "One man's waste is another man's treasure" to life. 🏆

🌍 What if one semester changes your worldview?

At University College Cork in Ireland, National University of Singapore, College of Humanities and Sciences’ Dominic Lim experienced a different style of teaching. He figured out how he learns best. He came away with a clearer sense of the impact he wants to make.

Some things were hard. New systems, new culture, new academic environment. But those tricky moments? They gave him some of his best takeaways.

"Looking back, many of the challenges I faced led to some of my best takeaways," he says.

A course chosen by chance turned into a whole new direction.

Manisekaran Harish majors in Data Science and Analytics with a minor in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) at NUS. One elective led him to geospatial data science, and from there, to internships at the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education in Singapore (CARES).

At URA, he built GIS pipelines and learned firsthand that data quality matters more than any model built on top of it. At Cambridge CARES, he works on urban health research, developing spatial exposure metrics like humid heat stress for Singapore.

Two very different roles. One clear direction.

"What excites me is using these tools on problems tied to real places, not just numbers on a screen, but actual streets and neighbourhoods."
