NUS Centre for Family and Population Research - NUS CFPR Welcome to the Official page of the Centre for Family and Population Research (CFPR)

The Centre for Family and Population Research (CFPR) is an interdisciplinary Centre at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, NUS that advances scientific research and training on family and population changes particularly in Asia. The Centre aims to stimulate dialogue and foster cross disciplinary collaboration between students, faculty researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. The goal is

to address critical issues and policies related to the family's well-being. We will utilise life course and international perspectives using a range of quantitative and qualitative methods. In the long run, CFPR envisions to achieve the following:

• To provide thought leadership in family and population research, particularly in Asia.

• To become a regional training centre for family and population research.

• To bridge basic academic research with public policies that affect families and children’s well-being.

• To collaborate with family and population centres around the world.

This study explores how interethnic marriage in China has changed over three decades, using national census data from 1982 to 2010 to examine the roles of ethnicity, education, and social status. While interethnic marriage remains relatively uncommon, it has increased over time, especially between minority groups and the Han majority. However, patterns vary significantly: some groups (like the Manchu and Mongolian) show high levels of intermarriage, while others (such as the Uyghur and Kazakh) maintain strong ethnic boundaries. Interestingly, the Manchu stood out for experiencing a decline, in contrast to the overall rise in intermarriage with the Han seen among other minority groups. Education plays a key role in bridging these divides. Among more assimilated groups, people with similar educational backgrounds are more likely to intermarry, highlighting the importance of shared socioeconomic status. At the same time, the study finds evidence of “status exchange”, where in some cases individuals trade educational advantages for the social or policy-related benefits linked to ethnic identity. Overall, the research shows that interethnic marriage in China reflects a complex mix of cultural identity, inequality, and state influence, offering new insights into how ethnic boundaries shift in a rapidly changing society.
