Repost from instagram.com/nuspresident - "Inspired by how far NUS has come—and even more excited about what lies ahead. Founded in 1905 as a modest medical school of just 23 students, NUS is today a global university transforming lives across Singapore and beyond!

Recently, I had the privilege of celebrating NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine’s 120th anniversary and NUH Medicine’s 40th anniversary alongside colleagues, alumni and friends at our Department of Medicine’s Anniversary Gala Dinner. It was a meaningful reminder of the generations of pioneers whose quiet determination built the foundation we stand on today.

Among them was our Guest of Honour, friend and fellow alumnus, Prof Tan Chorh Chuan. His leadership—from steering the Department of Medicine as Head and NUS as former President, to helping Singapore overcome SARS as Director of Medical Services at the Ministry of Health—reflects the spirit of public service and excellence that defines our community. Chorh Chuan now continues to contribute to Singapore as Permanent Secretary (National Research & Development).

As we mark these milestones, our greatest legacy remains the people we nurture. I am confident that the next generation of healthcare professionals, researchers, and innovators will continue to push boundaries, improve lives, and shape the future of healthcare for decades to come!"

“Through this experience, we had the opportunity to interact with athletes representing universities from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand and Australia. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and many unforgettable memories were made along the way.” – Team Manager and student-athlete Yi Lin from NUS Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies.

🇸🇬 Singapore was represented by a formidable 13-strong contingent at this year’s Asian University Dragon Boat Championship in China — and every single athlete was from TeamNUS! 🦁

While flying the and NUS flags with pride, our student-athletes from TeamNUS Canoeing and NUS Rowing also embraced the opportunity to connect with peers from across Asia and Oceania. 🌎

Beyond the races, they were enriched by cultural exchange, new friendships, shared stories and unforgettable memories. It was a chance to broaden perspectives, celebrate a shared passion for sport, and experience the unique camaraderie that brings student-athletes together across borders.

Opportunities like these remind us that some of the most meaningful moments happen beyond the classroom — through the people we meet, the cultures we encounter, and the connections we build along the way.

🌊As sea levels rise due to climate change, protecting Singapore’s coastlines becomes more vital than ever. At NUS, Associate Professor Peter Todd from NUS Biological Sciences is developing innovative “green-grey” coastal protection systems. These hybrid structures integrate engineered coastal defenses with nature-based marine species. The approach not only strengthens shoreline resilience against climate change impacts but also restores coastal ecosystems affected by urban development.

In the 15-year gap between these first two photos, Mr and Mrs Lee have seen their son Xavier grow from a young student into a mentor for his juniors at Radin Mas Primary School. Now a NUS Computing undergraduate, Xavier returned to his alma mater as part of Teach Singapore (Teach SG), discovering the impact of being there for someone who needs support.

Over six months of volunteering, Xavier became a steady weekly presence for his mentees, someone they could look to like an older sibling for peace, encouragement, and stability. Having seen how sometimes children can feel that they “are not good enough”, he wanted to create a safe space where they could fail without stigma, celebrate small wins, and grow in confidence.

From student to mentor, Xavier’s journey reflects how the communities and schools that nurture us can leave a lasting imprint, shaping not only who we become, but also how we choose to give back to others.

👀 At NUS, some courses are leveraging GenAI to create immersive, simulation-based learning experiences. ScholAIstic, developed as a collaboration between the NUS AI Centre for Educational Technologies (AICET) and NUS Department of Social Work (NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), has been deployed innovatively in courses at Social Work and NUS Faculty of Dentistry ✨ In Social Work, it functions as a chatbot that simulates clients with complex and challenging needs, helping students develop empathy, communication skills, and real-world decision-making. Meanwhile, in Dentistry 🦷, it serves as a tutor that guides the learning process while providing students with personalised feedback and support.

From immersive simulations to personalised learning support, NUS is blending AI with education in meaningful and practical ways. 🤖📚 We are reshaping how education is delivered - making learning more interactive, engaging, and still deeply human-centred.

Turning pomegranate peels into a-peel-ing water purifiers. 💧🍎

Researchers from the Department of Chemistry have developed a material made from discarded pomegranate peels that can remove more than 94% of a toxic industrial pollutant fromNational University of Singapore, Faculty of Science

The team transformed fruit waste into nanobiochar, a carbon-rich material that traps pollutants efficiently, capable of removing 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), a harmful compound commonly found in industrial wastewater. The material also retained strong performance even after being reused multiple times.

The researchers are now testing the material in real wastewater samples and exploring how it could be integrated into existing treatment systems.

🌎💡🤝🦁 Repost from instagram.com/nuspresident - "Earlier this month, we were privilege to welcome our university partner – Professor Reginald DesRoches, President of Rice University, and his team, to Singapore and NUS!

We had a meaningful dialogue on the importance of global engagement and partnerships in today’s fast-changing world. Among the key topics discussed was the growing role of AI in higher education. As we exchanged perspectives on integrating AI into teaching, one priority remained clear which is in preparing our students to thrive in an AI-enabled future.

Dialogues like these remind me of the enduring value of human connection which AI cannot replace. I am heartened by our shared commitment to harnessing AI for good and, through research and innovation, shaping a better tomorrow together."

For NUS College of Design and Engineering undergraduate Huzaifah Baharudin, sustainability should be engineered, not just discussed 🌱

Driven by a passion for environmental causes, Huzaifah believes that protecting the planet is a shared responsibility because “we are all inhabitants of Earth, so why not be its biggest advocate?”

Through Youth Corps Singapore's Youth Corps Leaders Programme (YCLP), he worked with Frontier Primary School to raise awareness about recycling and discovered how meaningful community action can be. The experience also gave him the confidence to step up and start initiatives of his own, eventually leading him to join the NUS Environmental & Sustainability Engineering Students' Club and intern part-time at a social enterprise start-up, Ecoworks.

For Huzaifah, volunteering is about more than environmental action. It is about connecting with people, learning from communities, and discovering that “being happy when seeing others happy is happiness multiplied.”

💚 Inspired to make a difference too? 💚
Do Good Fest by Youth Corps Singapore is happening from now till 31 July 2026, with over 4,000 volunteering opportunities across causes such as the environment, mental health, seniors, children and community health. Whether you want to volunteer once or commit long-term, there’s something for everyone.

A big leap for personalised medicine! Researchers from NUS College of Design and Engineering and iHealthtech NUS have developed an innovative DNA barcoding technique to quickly screen gold nanoparticle designs in living systems to identify top performers that can effectively deliver therapies to mitochondria (the energy centre) of cancer cells to destroy them.

Their research also demonstrates how nanoparticle design such as shape, size, and surface chemistry, influences their ability to accumulate in tumours and reach mitochondria. This, in turn, affects treatment effectiveness.
