Established on 1 October 2011, the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) builds upon 60 years of experience in research, training and practice as a Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. At SSHSPH, our objective is in turning public health discovery into healthier communities. We conduct public health research across various disciplines and translate our evidence-based findings

to develop innovative and sustainable practices, programmes and policies. In doing so, we aim to effectively tackle public health concerns and improve the health of communities in Singapore and the region. We’re glad that you’ve arrived here at our page, which we hope will become a space for you to connect with SSHSPH, learn what’s going on with us and discuss all issues related to public health. We are delighted to share that Assoc Prof Cynthia Chen, has been commended the Young Researcher Award at the NUS University Awards 2026, for her impactful research on ageing and healthcare financing.

Her work has contributed to evidence-based policymaking in Singapore and provided insights to the wider community on global ageing population.

Using the Future Elderly Model (FEM), Assoc Prof Chen’s research examined disease burden, lifetime healthcare costs and the long-term impact of interventions among older adults in Singapore. By modelling health outcomes and healthcare spending across three major ethnic groups, the study highlighted how lifestyle interventions could help delay the onset of chronic conditions and reduce future healthcare costs.

We are proud to see research from our School making a meaningful difference to Singapore, contributing to the wider conversation on healthy ageing.

Having a stable career in nursing didn’t stop Dr. Cheng Ling Jie Jeremy from thinking, what more can he do in healthcare?

He took a leap of faith and joined the Master of Public Health programme, where his Master’s thesis, supported by Assoc Prof Luo Nan, became his first published paper and was later recognised as Editor’s Choice.

That moment wasn't really about the publication. It was about what sparked in him.

That belief carried him further to pursue his PhD, then becoming a nurse scientist specialising in health economics and outcomes research at the University of Oxford, where his works focus on improving the lives of mothers and newborns.

As measles resurges globally, the debate over vaccination is taking a new turn. Calls to administer separate measles, mumps and rubella vaccines instead of the combined MMR vaccine have raised questions about what such a shift could mean for immunisation worldwide.

Policy changes could affect vaccine production, supply chains and access, particularly in lower- and middle-income countries. At the same time, misinformation can erode confidence in vaccines and public health institutions. The challenge extends beyond any single vaccine or policy. It is about sustaining the trust, access and systems needed to ensure that proven public health interventions continue to work in the real world.

Congratulations to Assoc Prof Raymond Lim on his promotion to Associate Professor with retrospective effect from 1 Jan 2026.

Assoc Prof Lim is currently the Leader of the Social & Behavioural Sciences (SBS) domain. He also holds educational leadership positions in the School, including Director of Undergraduate Programmes (Public Health Minor and Second Major) and Director of Pedagogical Research.

Assoc Prof Lim has been with the School since 2015, and he is known as a teacher who has a positive impact on student learning through his teaching, leadership roles and scholarly activities. One of Assoc Prof Lim’s significant achievements in education includes the enhancement of the Minor and Second Major Undergraduate Programmes in Public Health. As a result of these improvements, students in the Minor and Second Major Programmes are better equipped with the necessary skills to understand and address today’s public health issues in Singapore and the region.

Once again, our heartiest congratulations to Assoc Prof Lim on his achievements, and we wish him continued success in his career!

Held in conjunction with World Mosquito Day, more than 100 secondary school students from SMK Kalabakan in Sabah, Malaysia took part in a school engagement programme to strengthen awareness of zoonotic malaria, mosquito-borne diseases, and the links between environmental change and human health.

The programme was jointly organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the National University of Singapore (NUS), and PACOS Trust under the SENSOR Project led by Assoc Prof Kimberly Fornace, with support from Yellow Door Communications.

The SENSOR Project studies diseases transmitted by mosquitoes to monkeys and people, including dengue, malaria, Zika, and Chikungunya, within Southeast Asia.

The programme shared how changes to the environment such as deforestation, land-use change and climate change, can affect ecosystems. These factors can influence interactions between people, wildlife and disease vectors. This is particularly relevant for communities that live near forests and wildlife, where environmental changes may contribute to changing patterns of exposure to mosquito-borne and other zoonotic diseases.

During the game segment “Save Our Village”, the board game introduced students to different scenarios involving environmental changes, disease risks and preventive measures. These made complex scientific, health concepts easier for students to understand.

Stronger partnerships between schools, higher education institutions and local communities support students’ understanding with relevant, visible examples about environmental change, climate change and health ecosystems.
