SERI Research Project Supported by PHC-SIAM 2026–2027: Franco–Thai Research Collaboration on Green Adsorbents and Catalysts and Waste Valorization
The Sustainable Environment Research Institute (SERI), Chulalongkorn University, continues to strengthen Franco–Thai research collaboration through the PHC-SIAM 2026–2027 project, “Valorization of Agricultural and Industrial Wastes into Green Adsorbents and Catalysts for Environmental and Renewable Energy Applications.” The project focuses on developing environmentally friendly adsorbents and catalysts from agricultural and industrial wastes, while promoting the exchange of researchers, students, knowledge, and technologies between Thailand and France.
The project is led on the Thai side by Dr. Pummarin Khamdahsag, Senior Researcher at SERI, and on the French side by Prof. Dr. Doan Pham Minh of IMT Mines Albi, France, who also serves as an Adjunct Professor at SERI, Chulalongkorn University. Throughout 2026, a series of collaborative activities were conducted in both Thailand and France, covering joint research, researcher and student mobility, training and knowledge transfer, visits to laboratories and research centers, academic events, and the joint development of research outputs.
One of the key activities was researcher mobility, through which two young researchers from the Thai side, both from the International Program in Hazardous Substance and Environmental Management (IP-HSM), undertook research and academic exchanges at IMT Mines Albi. Mr. Aphinan Saengsrichan is conducting a seven-month research stay, while Ms. Simron Rai completed a 20-day short-term research and training visit. Both also participated in the Summer School in Catalysis 2026, gaining knowledge and exchanging experiences with the French research team in materials science, catalysis, and advanced characterization techniques.
In addition, a Thai research delegation comprising Dr. Pummarin Khamdahsag and Dr. Nattapong Tuntiwattanapun, researchers from SERI, together with Asst. Prof. Dr. Sarttrawut Tulaphol from the Department of Chemistry, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), visited IMT Mines Albi, France, from 19–27 July 2026. The delegation visited several research centers and groups, including RAPSODEE (PP and EE groups), the CGI Center, and the ICA-A Center, to explore research facilities, expertise, and infrastructure. The visit also included a PHC-SIAM project progress meeting and discussions on expanding collaboration in student and researcher mobility, joint publications, shared access to research facilities and infrastructure, and the development of future proposals for international research funding.
In August, the Thai team welcomed a delegation from IMT Mines Albi, comprising Prof. Dr. Doan Pham Minh, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vincent Oriez, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elsa Weiss Hortala, who visited Thailand during 16–23 August 2026 under the PHC-SIAM Franco–Thai Cooperation Program.
The activities were extended beyond researchers directly involved in the project to the wider academic community and interested participants through the Special Seminar on Green Materials and Processes for Environmental and Energy Applications, held at SERI, Chulalongkorn University on 19 August 2026. The seminar featured lectures and knowledge exchange by Thai and French researchers on carbon materials, green chemistry and process intensification, renewable-energy catalysis, and lithium and valuable-metal recovery from spent batteries. The seminar attracted 83 participants from academic, research, student, professional, company, and other interested groups, with 39 attending onsite and 44 joining online via Zoom. This reflected the project’s effort to expand its capacity-building activities beyond the immediate research network and promote broader knowledge sharing.
Another important activity was the extension of the project’s waste valorization concept toward battery recycling and resource recovery. On 18 August 2026, Thai and French researchers visited the Pilot-Scale Battery Recycling Facility at EGAT Wang Noi Power Plant, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, where they exchanged knowledge on battery recycling and the recovery of lithium and other valuable metals. The visit built upon research led by Prof. Dr. Nurak Grisdanurak, a researcher in the PHC-SIAM project, with research support from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The activity also opened further discussions on developing future Franco–Thai collaboration in this emerging research area.
Through these activities in 2026, the project has advanced several of the Collaboration Activities identified in the original proposal, including joint progress meetings, knowledge and technology transfer in advanced characterization, workshops, training and seminars, student and researcher mobility, joint supervision and research development, and the preparation of publications and presentations for international academic platforms. Current outputs include published research, presentations at a Summer School and international conferences, as well as manuscripts being jointly developed by the Thai and French teams.
The first year of PHC-SIAM has therefore provided an important foundation for achieving the project’s expected outputs, including strengthening and expanding the France–Thailand research network, developing materials and processes, producing joint academic outputs, and enhancing the capacities of students and researchers through international research and knowledge exchange. These achievements will support the continuation and further development of collaborative activities in 2027, with KMUTT serving as the co-host institution.
