John and his family - originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo - now reside in the Kyaka II refugee settlement in Western Uganda together with 128,000 other refugees.

John and his wife have worked hard to provide for the family since they arrived in Uganda. With a background as teacher, John even managed to secure a short-term job. However, not for long as employment opportunities are scarce.

The family was recently taken off WPF’s foods assistance due to a prioritisation exercise. Now the household of 11 is struggling to put food on the table and John is concerned about the future. “If only we could get a small piece of livelihood”, he says. John's story is far from an isolated case, as numerous households in Kyaka II and other settlements face similar challenges with no immediate prospect of returning to the conflict ridden DRC.

A new Danish supported program, the Uganda Refugee Resilience Initiative (URRI) seeks to address some of the pressing needs. Operating not only in Kyegegwa but also in a total of 9 districts across West Nile and Northern Uganda, URRI is dedicated to promoting sustainable and durable solutions for both refugees and host communities.

With an objective of enhancing climate resilience, fostering environmentally sustainable development, and strengthening gender equality, URRI aims to provide better livelihood options for families such as John’s.
