🎙️: Miyerlandy Cabanzo Valencia is a Colombian national and a Cohort 9 Peace Fellow at the Makerere University Rotary Peace Center.

"Digital exclusion is a peace issue. Racist online threats are a peace issue. When activists cannot safely organise, advocate, or speak truth, communities lose the people who fight hardest for justice."

Three things this research calls all of us to do:
✅Expand how we define digital violence to include structural exclusion, not only direct online attacks.
✅Centre the voices and experiences of activists in the Global South when designing digital safety frameworks.
✅Treat internet access and digital literacy as peacebuilding tools, not afterthoughts.

Education, awareness, and targeted interventions against cyberbullying and trolling mirror peacebuilding strategies by de-escalating online conflicts, fostering empathy, and resolving disputes non-violently. Just as mediators build dialogue in communities, digital literacy and restorative justice prevent escalation, promoting harmony in virtual spaces vital for societal peace.
