ICPAU has the mandate to regulate and maintain the standard of accountancy; and to prescribe or regulate the conduct of accountants in Uganda. The Institute is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA). As part of its role, ICPAU carries out the following activities:
1. Registration and examination of students in two courses
- Certified Public Accountants of Uganda [CPA(U)] and Accounting Technicians Certificate of Uganda [ACT(U)].
2. Registration of professional accountants in Uganda.
3. Authorization of audit firms to practice in Uganda.
5. Monitoring of audit firms to ensure that they execute their duties in public interest.
6. Prescription of professional standards.
7. Implementation of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme to keep members, students and the general public abreast of developments within and beyond the accountancy profession.
8. Publication of a magazine - "Today's Accountant", to meet the information needs of various stakeholders.
