Jillian's' passion for fashion, creativity, social media, and making connections doesn't go unnoticed. She loves the opportunities the department has given her! After graduation Jillian hopes to make her way to Chicago pursue a career in fashion, PR, or social media!

To celebrate Labor Day, AESHM is spotlighting three students whose internships gave them valuable hands-on experience in their industries. Happy Labor Day! 💼

Ranae Van Voorst — A senior in Fashion Design and Merchandising with a minor in Event Management, Ranae interned with TJX Companies in Westminster, Colorado, gaining experience in retail management, merchandising, and store operations. Her experience taught her to “always be adaptable to change and to always be thinking ahead.”

Ashley Scanlon — A senior in Event Management, Ashley interned with the Gurnee Park District in Illinois, gaining hands-on experience planning and executing community events. She learned the importance of “develop[ing] a clear vision for an event and communicat[ing] plans effectively.”

Hailey Burton — A senior in Event Management, Hailey interned with the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, gaining experience in event coordination, entertainment, contests, contracts, and parade planning. One of her biggest takeaways was that “making mistakes is a normal part of learning” and that taking responsibility demonstrates professionalism.

For 100 years, the Iowa State Tearoom has been bringing students, faculty, staff and the community together around good food, meaningful experiences and a whole lot of Cyclone tradition.

Now, it’s time to celebrate! 🎉

We’re kicking off our 100th anniversary year with a soft opening on September 9 at The Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom.

For our first week, we’ll be serving one special menu:

ISU FASHION CAMP 2026 👗 ⛺

This summer, we welcomed creative minds and aspiring fashion professionals from high schools around the nation to Iowa State for Fashion Camp!

Throughout the week, campers explored the many sides of fashion design and merchandising while building friendships and collaborating with one another. From an ice tie-dye workshop and sustainable accessory design to a fashion styling photoshoot, their creativity and enthusiasm were on full display.

If this summer was any indication, the future of fashion design and merchandising looks bright. ✨

Congratulations to Dr. SoJung Lee on being named one of the Global 100 Most Influential Educators in Hospitality for 2026 by the International Hospitality Institute, marking her second consecutive year receiving this prestigious honor.

This international recognition reflects Dr. Lee's continued leadership in hospitality education and her commitment to advancing the field through teaching, research and student mentorship. We are proud to have her expertise shaping the next generation of hospitality professionals in our department.

From research presentations to national leadership, the Department of Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management made a strong showing at this year's ICHRIE Conference!

AESHM faculty and graduate students shared 25 research presentations (13 stand-up and 12 poster presentations), showcasing innovative hospitality research alongside colleagues from around the world.

The conference also brought several exciting milestones:
🏆 Graduate student Nikol Lopez and Dr. SoJung Lee received a Commendable Conference Paper Award.
🎉 Dr. Eric Brown was elected ICHRIE Director of Membership.
📚 Drs. SoJung Lee and Minwoo Lee were named co-chairs of the 2026 Research Marathon.
🤝 More than 30 alumni, faculty, students and friends gathered during the ISU Alumni Reception to reconnect and celebrate the Cyclone community.

Congratulations to everyone who represented Iowa State University and AESHM on the international stage!
