Juneteenth 2026 marks 161 years since that delayed but powerful moment of liberation.

And no one carried that moment forward more fiercely than Opal Lee.

Born in 1926, Opal witnessed racial violence firsthand as a child when a white mob burned her family’s home on Juneteenth in Fort Worth. Rather than let that trauma become bitterness, she let it become fuel. For decades, well into her 80s and 90s, she walked 1.4 miles in communities across the country, symbolizing the two and a half years enslaved people waited for freedom. She called them her “two and a half mile walks.”

At the age of 94, she saw her life’s mission fulfilled when President Biden signed Juneteenth into law as a federal holiday in 2021.

She always said, “It’s not just a Black thing. It’s an American thing.”

The Board of Education today unanimously approved a new contract for Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bedell that will see the 26-year education veteran continue to lead Anne Arundel County Public Schools for the next four years.
