James recently visited the South Carolina Supreme Court and was pleased to see his portrait of Chief Justice Donald W. Beatty, Jr. It hangs in the lobby with other portraits of Chief Justices and is the first thing visitors see when they arrive. The painting is 54 x 38 inches.

It was an honor for James to paint this portrait of Dr. Wesley Burks, commissioned to celebrate his retirement as Dean of the UNC School of Medicine and CEO of UNC Health Care. His leadership and dedication to medicine and education have made a lasting impact on the UNC community.

This is the second Crowley Portrait hanging at UNC - the first being Dr. Bill Roper.

Recently, while working on an upcoming project, James encountered a portrait he painted in 2014. The work hangs in the newly completed Roper Hall at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The portrait honors Dr. William L. Roper, a visionary leader in medicine, who was dean of the medical school and CEO of the UNC Health Care System until 2019.

It is always a pleasure to see completed works hanging in the spaces for which they were created.

On April 22, 2025, the South Carolina Supreme Court honored retired Chief Justice Donald W. Beatty with the unveiling of his official portrait, recognizing his decades of service to the state’s judiciary.

With a career spanning nearly 30 years—including seven as Chief Justice—Beatty’s legacy was celebrated by legal leaders, public officials, and the community. His portrait, painted by our own James Crowley, now joins the Court’s historic collection.

Governor Henry McMaster also presented Justice Beatty with the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor.

We are pleased to present the most recent horse portrait of Rarity and his owner, Ann Marie Locklear. Ann Marie is a talented architectural and interior designer as well as an accomplished equestrienne.

Sissy Ballenger (1951-2025) and her daughter Caroline. A light in the world has gone out. This portrait was painted by me in the mid to late 90’s. Peace to Sissy and all who loved her.
