History at Oglethorpe University The History Dept within Division II (History, Politics and International Studies) at Oglethorpe University Faculty:
Day Program
* Dr. W.

Oglethorpe offers traditional and evening students a BA in History as well as a minor. Courses are taught in a seminar format designed to promote lively interchange and informed debate. Reading assignments draw on a wide range of historical methods and traditions, including perspectives from religion, philosophy, art, music, literature, and popular culture as well as politics, economics, and geogr

aphy. These methods and perspectives inform independent student research. In their individual projects, students develop their own research agendas and learn to master the techniques of historical research. Particular emphasis is placed on presentation – both written and oral – of evidence, arguments, and conclusions. Oglethorpe’s location provides many opportunities for creative research as well as internships. The experience and training of Oglethorpe history majors prepares them for postgraduate study in a wide variety of academic disciplines, including history, archaeology,
anthropology, politics, international studies, and social work, as well as careers in such fields as education, law, journalism, public relations, art, theology, diplomacy, and public service. Bradford Smith
* Dr. Nicholas B. Maher

Dr. Bobroff participated recently in an online roundtable on a new work on the First World War, David Stevenson's /1917: War, Peace, and Revolution/. You can read his review, the reviews of other scholars, and the author's response at this location:

Part of professional historians service to the profession is to review other historians' books, either for print or online publications. It's part of the ongoing scholarly discussion that we draw into he classroom to help make the history in the textbooks come alive.

Battlefield tours are interesting, and hiking through old battlefields can be nice, but the best things to bring home are memories, not artifacts!

The woman thought the unexploded World War II shell she found could be taken home as a souvenir. She reportedly washed it in her hotel room to not get her clothes dirty, but wasn't worried about an explosion.

While as a campus, we are remembering the First World War this semester with courses, lectures, films, a music recital and more, it's worth remembering events 50 years ago today: the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. One of the more gripping books we teach in COR 302 is Heda Kovaly's memoir, Under a Cruel Star - she ends with a description of those events.

The invasion of Czechoslovakia did more than shatter the hopes of a country. It laid bare the totalitarian nature of the Communist regime.
