Save the date for PRiSMM’s June webinar featuring Donna L. Schuurman, EdD, FT. This session will examine how su***de bereavement is understood within diagnostic systems and explore the ongoing debate around “prolonged grief disorder” in the DSM 5 TR. Dr. Schuurman will discuss the potential impact of diagnostic labels, the risks and benefits of pathologizing grief, and the value of grief informed and humanistic approaches when supporting su***de bereaved individuals.

Participants will consider how labeling shapes care, identify grief informed practices, and critically evaluate dominant clinical paradigms related to loss. This webinar is intended for behavioral health clinicians, social workers, primary care providers, emergency medicine professionals, and health professions students.

Our next webinar for Preventing Risk of Su***de in Michigan Men initiative will provide a focused introduction to the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) framework. This 90-minute session will cover CAMS philosophy, core assessment and treatment mechanics, and current evidence for use with teens and adults. The workshop will also address adaptations for acute care settings and considerations for involving parents in this individual therapy approach.

Participants will learn to explain the philosophy underlying CAMS, describe key components of CAMS assessment and intervention, and understand how its drivers focused approach differs from traditional crisis management models. This session is intended for behavioral health clinicians, social workers, primary care providers, emergency medicine professionals, and health professions students.

Make the Right Call promotes clear guidance on when to use 211, 988, or 911 so communities can connect with the right support at the right time. Local partners in Midland and Bay Counties are preparing coordinated messaging and distributing Make the Right Call magnets to community businesses, healthcare settings, and other public spaces to strengthen awareness of crisis and resource lines.

A new study published in JAMA reports that roughly 4,300 fewer teens and young adults died by su***de in the years following the launch of the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline. Read the study at jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2848066

Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education is coming to Saginaw on June 9. This free, in person certification course helps campus communities recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges, offer supportive responses, and connect individuals with resources. Open to CMU students, faculty, staff and community partners. Please feel free to share with others who may be interested.

Our team is in San Diego this week for the National Rural Health Association Annual Conference, joining national partners and organizations committed to improving health outcomes in rural communities. NRHA continues to highlight the realities rural residents face, including higher rates of chronic disease, limited access to care, workforce shortages, and the impact of distance and infrastructure on overall health. Soul Shop Su***de Prevention equips communities to recognize and respond to suicidal desperation. Their work supports Michigan’s Preventing Su***de in Michigan Men initiative by strengthening local gatekeepers and expanding access to practical prevention tools. Learn more at soulshopmovement.org

Shop Talk brings men together in familiar community spaces like barbershops to talk openly about mental health, stress, and su***de prevention. PRiSMM partners collaborate with local organizations to host these conversations and connect men with support. PRiSMM’s June webinars will highlight two key areas of su***de prevention for clinicians and health care providers.

On June 17, Natalie Burns, LMSW, MA will offer a focused introduction to the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), covering CAMS philosophy, core assessment and treatment mechanics, and its drivers focused approach to care.
