That moment when you teach a strategy one way, and it clicks for half your class... and the other half just stares at you. đź‘€

Stanford professor + Struggly co-founder Dr. .boaler has spent decades figuring out why this happens & what to do about it.

Stretch it. Shrink it. Land right on the target. 📏

Shrink & Stretch makes measurement something students can see, not just calculate. They drag an object until it matches a goal length, checking their work with grid lines and a measurement tool.

As rounds move between inches, feet, yards, and miles, students start noticing how those units connect and relate to the real world.

You’re told to let students “embrace mistakes!”……but then what?

Telling students to keep trying isn’t enough. What actually shifts belief is progress: students hit a roadblock, change their approach, and experience that change paying off. Persistence has to lead somewhere for it to mean anything.

That's the design problem we built Struggly tasks to solve.

It's okay to be wrong. In fact, it might be the most important thing a student learns in the first weeks of school.

Confidence in math doesn't start with a skill. It starts with students believing they're allowed to get stuck, try again, and still be good at this.

In her latest post, Dr. Tanya LaMar shares three routines she leaned on every August as a classroom teacher to build that confidence from day one:

🔎 Open with a Notice & Wonder
đź‘€ Give students time to explore visually before you explain the procedure
🌱 Let "I don't know how to do this...yet" become something students say out loud, not something they hide

None of it means redesigning your math block. Just a few small shifts that tell students: you belong here, and you can do this, even when you get it wrong along the way.

Before a student memorizes that 3 × 4 = 12, what if they could see why it’s true?

Understanding sticks when students explore a concept visually first. The facts and procedures come later, and they mean something when they land.

In this Struggly task, students slide their way into 3 x 4, and the array grows right in front of them. One student sees three groups of four. Another says wait, that’s just 4 + 4 + 4. Someone on the other side of the room flips it: four groups of three, or 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.

Same idea… four different ways to see it.

That’s not one fact. That’s a web of ideas connected to the same piece of math, and students are the ones making the connections, not just receiving them.

Skip the explanation. Skip the modeling. Ask two questions instead:

What do you notice? What do you wonder?

That's the whole hook. Every student can do it.

If you teach or coach math, pay attention to the first few weeks. They shape how kids see themselves as math learners more than anything else you'll do this year.

On August 18th, Tanya LaMar (Struggly CEO) and Rea Smith, a former classroom teacher and math coach, are hosting a free webinar on three routines that build real confidence early:

✏️ Notice & Wonder to open discussions
🔍 Visual explorations to build understanding
đź’Ş Productive struggle that actually sticks

You can try these in your classroom the next morning.

Representations are at the heart of NY's Numeracy Initiative. But knowing they matter and knowing what they actually look like in your classroom? Two very different things.

On April 29th, we're digging into exactly that.

📊 Using Representations to Build Number Sense
Aligned to NY Brief 6 | April 29 | 4 PM EST | FREE

This session is grounded in real classroom practice. You'll hear from Marissa Pennington, an educator from Brooklyn, who'll share what using representations actually looks like in the classroom — and how it's working for her teachers and students.

You'll also work through 2–3 math tasks that surface multiple representations and leave with three teacher moves you can use immediately.

If you're a NY math teacher navigating the Numeracy Initiative in your classroom, this one's for you.

Many students struggle in math because they lack number sense.
boaler—Struggly co-founder, Stanford professor, and author of Math-ish—suggests a simple shift:

Ask for the “ish” answer first.

280 Ă· 9? About 30-ish. đź’ˇ

Now students are reasoning, not just calculating.

It’s how we naturally make sense of numbers: through estimation and reasoning, not just exact answers. Start with the “ish” value so students can judge what’s reasonable before they calculate.
