Los satélites GPS, son esenciales para la navegación de nuestros teléfonos y automóviles y a su vez ofrecen poderosas herramientas para estudiar la superficie de la Tierra. Las señales que emiten se reflejan en el suelo, como un espejo, y regresan al espacio. Al capturar estas señales reflejadas con pequeños satélites, podemos mapear y monitorear los cambios en la superficie de la Tierra. La profesora Cynthia Gerlein-Safdi utiliza esta tecnología para rastrear inundaciones y ríos a nivel mundial. En su charla, explorará cómo una nueva generación de satélites está mejorando simultáneamente la cartografía del agua, las predicciones climáticas y los esfuerzos humanitarios.

Join us for “How improvements in flood mapping can save lives and resources” completely in Spanish with Dr. Cynthia Gerlein-Safdi, Professor, Hydrologist in the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley on February 25 at the Oakland Public Library: César E Chavez Branch! GPS satellites, which are essential for navigating our phones and cars, also offer powerful tools for studying Earth’s surface. The signals they emit reflect off the ground, much like a mirror, and return to space. By capturing these reflected signals with small satellites, we can map and monitor changes in Earth’s surface. Prof. Cynthia Gerlein-Safdi utilizes this technology to track floods and rivers globally. In her talk, she will explore how a new generation of satellites is improving water mapping, climate predictions, and humanitarian efforts simultaneously.
