Congratulations to Vamsi Singu, a UAB undergraduate researcher in the lab of Erik Roberson, M.D., Ph.D., on being named a 2026 Goldwater Scholar, one of the nation’s most prestigious awards for undergraduate research.

Singu, who studies neuroscience and conducts research at UAB, plans to pursue an M.D. and Ph.D. with the goal of identifying new therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative disease. This recognition highlights both academic excellence and a strong commitment to advancing scientific discovery.

Emma Hobby, Ph.D. student in the UAB Graduate Biomedical Sciences neurosciences theme, is earning international recognition for her research in Alzheimer’s disease.

Hobby won the Lightning Presentation Round at the 2025 International Tau Global Conference, where her talk, “Multimodal Networks Identify Synaptic Targets Related to Tau Seeds in Alzheimer’s Disease,” was selected as the top presentation among more than 10 speakers.

Her research uses advanced computational network approaches to analyze human data and identify promising therapeutic targets.

As a result of this achievement, she will present her work at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London.

For decades, patients and families asked the same question: Can anything slow Alzheimer’s? Now, that answer is beginning to change.

UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Neurology is helping lead a new era of care with anti-amyloid therapies shown to slow disease progression. At the same time, the team has redesigned how Alzheimer’s care is delivered, building one of the nation’s largest programs with more than 300 patients in treatment.

By bringing neurologists, nurse practitioners, case managers, and social workers together in a coordinated care model, UAB is working to expand access and better support patients across Alabama.
