Congratulations to James R. Stallworth, M.D., FAAP '76, 2026 recipient of the MAA's Distinguished Alumnus Award that recognizes an individual's outstanding contribution to the health of all people through basic research, clinical research, health services administration, health care or others and their demonstration of the high principles of the medical profession.

After completing his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, Dr. Stallworth joined the faculty at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia, where he has taught and mentored generations of medical students and residents for more than 47 years. A founding leader of Prisma Health Children’s Hospital and recipient of more than 55 teaching awards, including national honors, Dr. Stallworth is widely recognized as a consummate physician educator whose impact on children’s health and medical training continues to shape the field.

Congratulations to Rachael A. Lee, M.D., MSPH '10, 2026 recipient of the MAA's Young Alumni Award that recognizes a young individual's outstanding contribution to the health of all people through basic research, clinical research, health services administration, health care, or others and demonstrates the high principles of the medal profession by a young alumnus.

Dr. Lee is a professor of medicine and Chief Healthcare Epidemiologist for UAB Medicine whose leadership has shaped infection prevention and patient safety at the highest levels. After completing residency and fellowships in infectious diseases and quality and patient safety at UAB, Dr. Lee emerged as a trusted leader during the COVID-19 pandemic, designing and implementing systemwide strategies that protected patients and healthcare workers. Nationally recognized for her expertise in antimicrobial stewardship and resistance, she is also a dedicated educator and mentor whose work continues to influence best practices, research, and training in academic medicine.

Congratulations to Groesbeck P. Parham, M.D.,'81 2026 recipient of the MAA's Martha Myers Role Model Award that recognizes physician alumni who make great contributions to patient care and the medical profession and often go unheralded.

Shaped by his experiences during the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham, Dr. Parham has devoted his work to advancing cancer prevention for underserved communities. From establishing early clinics for women with HIV to leading transformative cervical and breast cancer screening efforts, his impact has been global. Since 2005, he has served in Zambia as a professor, researcher, and national leader in women’s cancer prevention, helping build programs that have screened more than 1.9 million women. Now a Senior Clinical Expert with the World Health Organization, Dr. Parham continues to lead worldwide efforts to eliminate cervical cancer through medicine, advocacy, and service. His son, Dr. Karlos Parham, joined us in March to accept the award on his behalf.

Congratulations to David R. Thrasher, M.D. '78, 2026 recipient of the MAA's Garber Galbraith Medical-Political Award that recognizes outstanding service to the medical profession and in the medical-political arena.

Dr. David Thrasher is a Pulmonologist and Critical Care physician whose 40+ year career embodies service and leadership. A top graduate of UAB Heersink School of Medicine, he postponed retirement to serve on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, caring for Alabama’s first hospitalized patients and helping build a statewide network that delivered more than 105,000 monoclonal antibody treatments. Honored for his pandemic leadership, conservation efforts, and lifetime of impact, Dr. Thrasher remains an active physician and advocate for public safety and opportunities for at-risk youth in Montgomery.

Congratulations to Will S. Rutland, M.D., J.D., MPH, '17 2026 recipient of the MAA's Hettie Butler Terry Community Service Award that recognizes outstanding commitment to community service, and one who has contributed to the advancement of their community through volunteer efforts, philanthropic endeavors, or both.

Dr. Will Rutland serves as Regional Chair of Psychiatry and Psychiatry Residency Director for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine’s Montgomery Campus. After earning his MD at UAB and completing residency and fellowships in Addiction and Public Psychiatry at Yale, he returned home to lead with purpose. Dr. Rutland also serves as medical director of Alabama’s first Street Psychiatry clinic, bringing mental health and addiction care directly to Montgomery’s unhoused community.

Congratulations to P. Drake Lavender, Jr., M.D. '01, 2026 recipient of the MAA's Distinguished Service Award that recognizes superior accomplishments to and contributions to the UAB Heersink School of Medicine .

A product of the Rural Medical Scholars Program and former chief resident, Dr. Lavender practiced full-spectrum family medicine in Pickens County before returning to educate the next generation. As Director of Rural Programs at the UA College of Community Health Sciences, he champions health equity and rural workforce development across Alabama.
