Fight Cogongrass at No Cost to Landowners

For the third year, financial relief will be available soon to assist Alabama landowners adversely affected by the non-native, invasive noxious w**d, cogongrass. The application period for the Cogongrass Mitigation Program will launch on February 20, 2024, at 8:00 a.m. Central Time, and the portal will remain open until March 29 at 5:00 p.m. Central Time or until the threshold of 150 applications is reached. Eligibility for the funding requires that applicants be private, non-industrial landowners. Property with cogongrass infestations must be located in any of the 67 counties of Alabama, although the landowner is not required to reside on the property or within the state. There is no minimum or maximum acreage ownership requirement to enroll. It is a cost-free program.

Administered by the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC), the Cogongrass Mitigation Program is made possible through a grant from the USDA Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Plant Protection & Quarantine (PPQ). The goals of this program are to reduce the number of infested acres, eliminate the damaging effects of cogongrass on existing ecosystems, and improve the productivity of sites impacted by the w**d. Additional objectives include slowing the spread of current establishments of cogongrass and preventing introductions into new areas of the state.

To apply for this funding or for further information regarding additional eligibility requirements, please visit the Cogongrass Mitigation Program section of the Alabama Forestry Commission’s website at forestry.alabama.gov/Pages/Management/Cogongrass.aspx. You may also email the AFC Cogongrass Coordinator at [email protected] or contact your local AFC office.

Update on Fire Alert for Alabama --
While forestry officials have rescinded the Fire Alert in 35 counties in the southern half of the state, the small amount of rain received in the last few days has not been enough to end drought conditions or wildfire danger in northern portions of the state. A Fire Alert remains in effect for 32 northern counties. Burn permits will be available to certified prescribed burn managers in those counties with the exception of DeKalb, Jackson, and Marshall. (See attached map for details.)

The Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) issued the burn restriction on September 22 because of the current drought situation, continued lack of precipitation, and high probability of fuel ignition. Since October is historically the state's driest month, drought conditions are expected to worsen.

The Forestry Commission is encouraging the public to exercise the utmost vigilance when conducting outdoor burns of any kind. To report a wildfire, call the Alabama Forestry Commission at (800) 392-5679. For more information on the current wildfire situation in the state or any other forestry-related issues, contact your local AFC office or visit the agency website at www.forestry.alabama.gov/Pages/Fire/Totals.aspx The Alabama Forestry Commission is the state agency committed to protecting Alabama’s invaluable forest assets as well as its citizens.

PGMS® 2022 Green Star Awards® Grand winner: Auburn University
“’I believe in work, hard work…’ is a line from our Auburn Creed. Our department structure is designed for success and that is achieved by teamwork. When help is needed, no one is excluded. A manager, irrigation tech, groundskeeper II and zone supervisor are all helping to achieve this quick sod repair in the heart of our campus one late afternoon. The “Auburn family” designation is often used when describing students and alumni, but it also certainly spills over into our department. We see ourselves more as a family than we do a department, and it shows.”
