Spatial Audio Tidepool kicked off this week at Virginia Tech.

Participants spent the first day diving into spatial audio through conversations, demonstrations, and hands-on exploration in The Cube and ICAT's audio labs.

Here's a look at some moments from yesterday's sessions as this year's cohort begins a week of learning, experimentation, and collaboration.

The 2026 Spatial Audio Tidepool brings together artists, researchers, engineers, composers, and audio professionals to explore the creative possibilities of immersive sound.

The week-long program focuses on spatial audio, a technology that allows sound to move and exist in three-dimensional space, through experimentation, collaboration, and creative practice. Participants will work with advanced audio systems, including Virginia Tech's 140-channel Cube, to create and experience sound in new ways.

We look forward to welcoming this year's cohort to The Cube at Virginia Tech.

Some behind-the-scenes moments from setting up 40x40 at the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

40x40 celebrates the 40th anniversary of the International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA), a one-of-a-kind archive dedicated to preserving the work and records of women in architecture while helping reshape the historical narrative of the field.

The exhibition creates a reflective immersive experience designed to raise awareness of the IAWA’s mission and inspire public engagement and contribution.

The project was previously featured at the Venice Biennale and began as an ICAT SEAD grant.

Date: May 23 – August 30
📍 Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria, VA.

What if there is information on how the brain is understanding music?

Throwing it back to “The Beat Goes On,” an ICAT-funded project from the Engagement Center for Creative Aging that brings together college students, persons experiencing dementia, and their caregivers through group singing.

Beyond building connection and breaking down stereotypes around aging and dementia, the project continues to explore the relationship between music, memory, and the brain with a unique big data twist, while also strengthening the town-gown relationship between the Virginia Tech student community and older adults through a choir project of its own.

Art that connects with people from plastic.

"Drosera Obscura" is a multi-sensory extended reality (XR) installation that integrates virtual reality, animatronics, sound and touch into a cohesive performance environment.

In this behind-the-scenes video, creators Tohm Judson and Thomas Tucker share insights into the development of the project, highlighting the inspiration, interdisciplinary collaboration, technical experimentation, and creative vision behind the work.

Developed through a partnership between the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) at Virginia Tech and CIRMMT at McGill University, the project reflects ongoing research into how immersive systems can foster deeper, more embodied forms of audience engagement.
