“Have the courage to face the uncertainties of the future.”

These words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1964 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech inspired the facade of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center at Bowie State University, where the quote is translated into waveforms expressed through the building’s louvres and windows.

At the heart of campus life, the Center serves as a hub for learning, creativity, and connection. A tribute wall honors Dr. King's life and legacy, while artwork and graphic elements throughout the building celebrate the importance of using one's voice to create positive change. In the spirit of Juneteenth, the Center reflects a shared belief in the power of education to advance opportunity and inspire future leaders.

“Every student receiving a Bowie State education will pass through this building at some point in their curriculum,” says Bowie State University President Aminta H. Breaux. “The skills they learn here will give them the self-confidence and practical tools to navigate real-world challenges in future career paths.”

A clover-shaped campus where learning doesn't happen in silos.

At Mingwan School in Shenzhen, three interconnected learning clusters overlap like the leaves of a clover, creating a campus where students from kindergarten through high school learn alongside one another. Continuous circulation across multiple levels encourages exploration and interaction, turning everyday movement through the building into opportunities for discovery, connection, and exchange.

Facing the sea, the campus is wrapped in a flowing facade inspired by the floating ribbons of the Dunhuang murals. White perforated panels and vibrant accents create a sense of movement, while layered folds filter daylight and give the building a light, billowing presence.

“The ‘Clover’ of Mingwan School creates an interconnected and inclusive campus environment, fostering a learning community where students and teachers can freely interact and explore,” says our client. “We believe every encounter, exchange, and discovery on this campus will nurture curiosity, creativity, initiative, and confidence, empowering students to become lifelong learners prepared for the future.”

Nearly a decade after it opened, the LEED Platinum Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford continues to deliver excellence in patient and family care while minimizing its impact on the environment.

Designed with direct input from patients, families, clinicians, and community leaders, the expansion established a new model for pediatric healthcare. Every floor is inspired by a different California ecosystem, transforming navigation into a journey of discovery. Outdoor terraces and gardens bring nature closer, offering moments of respite and connection throughout the care experience.

The hospital was designed to advance sustainability without compromising care. Energy-efficient facade shading, displacement ventilation, water-saving strategies, and reclaimed local materials help reduce energy use by 60% compared to the average regional hospital.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see how the project continues to perform as intended nearly a decade later,” says Megan Koehler, Director of Operations in our San Francisco studio and a key member of the original project team. “The best buildings don't just look good on opening day—they evolve with their communities, supporting meaningful experiences and delivering measurable impact for years to come.”

Designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and discovery, Franklin Antonio Hall supports the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering by housing thirteen large research facilities known as “collaboratories.” The building breaks down traditional barriers between disciplines, bringing together researchers, faculty, and students to address some of society’s most pressing challenges, including renewable energy technologies, smart cities and transportation systems, wearable and robotics innovations, and precision medicine.

This center reimagines student dining as a destination for wellness, connection, and campus life. Built on the site of a flood-prone underground dining facility damaged during Hurricane Harvey, the project transforms a once-vulnerable location into a resilient, welcoming hub that brings together healthy food options, social engagement, public art, and a strong connection to nature. A variety of seating environments—from sheltered outdoor patios to individual study nooks and daylit communal spaces—support a range of student experiences throughout the day.

Located in Tongzhou, a historic port along the Grand Canal and Beijing’s eastern gateway, this cultural landmark draws inspiration from the site's rich history while looking toward its future. Home to an opera house, theater, and concert hall, the center welcomes hundreds of performances each year and has become a major destination for arts and culture.

𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐢 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭
Rising above a lush urban park, Shanghai Library East takes inspiration from Taihu stones, the sculptural rocks celebrated for centuries in Chinese scholarly tradition. Designed to support creativity, collaboration, and cultural exchange, more than 80% of the building is dedicated to public and community-focused activities.

𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐠
A bold rethinking of industrial architecture, Shenzhen Energy Ring transforms a waste-to-energy facility into a civic landmark. One of the first industrial buildings in China to achieve LEED Gold certification, the project processes 5,000 tons of municipal waste daily while inviting the public to learn about environmental issues and resource recovery through an immersive visitor experience.

Maya Residential Complex redefines vertical living by dissolving the boundaries between interior space and the surrounding landscape. Through layered concrete facades, open terraces, and lush tropical vegetation, the tower creates a continuous dialogue between architecture and nature, allowing the building to feel both grounded and alive within its Brazilian context.

The best workplaces don’t ask people to leave parts of themselves at the door. They create room for people to feel supported, valued, and empowered to thrive. That kind of environment shapes not only how teams collaborate, but also the spaces and communities they design.

As we recognize , we’re reflecting on the ongoing work of building a more inclusive and supportive workplace across our practice. Earlier this year, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation once again named Perkins&Will a "Best Place to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality," awarding the firm a perfect score of 100 on its 2026 Corporate Equality Index for the seventh consecutive year. This recognition affirms our continued commitment to advancing LGBTQ+ protections, inclusion, and advocacy.

An indoor/outdoor amenities hub serves as the connective core, fostering collaboration, community, and a shared sense of identity while celebrating the individuality of each group.

More than a residence hall, this building serves as a home base for future doctors, scientists, and educators. Just four blocks from campus, it houses 272 medical and graduate students in bright, sustainable spaces designed to support focus, connection, and restoration. From daylight-filled study nooks to yoga studios, music rooms, and rooftop terraces, every element encourages healthy routines that students can carry into their medical careers.
