My name is Dr. Ajaya Williams. So thank you for allowing me to indulge in your time.

I am a Brooklyn born and raised recent graduate from Teachers College doctoral health education program as well as a certified athletic trainer currently working for Columbia University for the past 1o years with athletics. I decided to start this blog to share my journey as a female athletic trainer in NYC, while promoting my passion for educating about health, wellness and injury prevention. My

goal is to create a platform to help me overcome my insecurities, set aside my self-awareness and connect with my viewers…… which is you.

studies show that out of 50 states, 8 is the average number most people have visited. Sadly, many never leave the state in which they were born. Put an X by all the states you have been to. Put a XX where you have lived. Passing through an airport counts--but flying over doesn't. The average is 8 for Americans. 33 FOR ME!

Certified and Licensed Athletic Trainers!!! Don’t let the title fools you, these individuals are the ones you think are doctors on the filed/sideline/court during football games, basketball games, baseball games etc etc. these the experts in the “training room” conducting all the rehab and return to play protocols!!! These professionals behind the scenes making sports possible and safe!!!! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

Sometimes the clinician becomes the patient. Amazing how when you are going too fast, God finds a way to slow your a$& down😳😳. On the upside, content for class, and no washing dishes for 2 weeks as per doctors orders. 😜😜Shout out to my amazing female ER physician at for patching me up🙏🏾

Last weekend I had the pleasure of crossing paths with people of varying seasons of my life. This solidified much of my focus on intentionality with my relationships. Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of connecting with three dear colleagues/friends of mine that happen to now work on the same staff

🎈David Hinds, Director of Player Performance for the Minnesota Timberwolves, was a former student when I was a GA at FSU.

🎈Erin Sierer, current Assistant AT/DPT for the Minnesota Timberwolves, was a fantastic classmate of mine at Hofstra University

🎈Charles Hooks, current Assistant AT/DPT for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Brooklyn native, who I have had the pleasure of working elite events with in NYC

All three people happenstance to be killing it with such a supportive organization, and I am happy to call them friends and colleagues. As I tell my students, the athletic training profession is a big/small fraternity. Make genuine connections; you never know when these connections will cross paths. I'm blessed we left a positive residue

Vanessa Brooks is with the Oklahoma City Thunder as a Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer. She previously served as the Head Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist for the Oklahoma City Blue, the Gatorade League (G League) affiliate of the Thunder.
Before her arrival to Oklahoma City, Brooks worked in Division I Athletics at Wake Forest University while completing her PT Sports Fellowship. In 2019, she became a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy. Prior to Wake Forest, Brooks worked in Duke’s Sports Medicine Clinic, provided part-time outreach to nearby high schools and a semi-professional football team, along with completing her PT Sports Residency. Brooks co-founded a preventative injury sports medicine program that bridged local Durham AAU basketball teams with Duke Sports Medicine.
Brooks completed her training as an EMT while working in the Ortho-Trauma unit at Grady Hospital and as a Head Athletic Trainer for an Atlanta Public School. Within her two year tenure within Atlanta Public Schools, Brooks started an Athletic Trainers’ Union with AFSCME. In Atlanta, she obtained her dry needling and Strength and Conditioning certifications and completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Emory University. At Emory, she received the Francis A. Curtiss Award and The Emory University Division of Physical Therapy Award for community service and excellence in the profession.
Brooks obtained her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Athletic Training at The University of Georgia, where she gained her first sports medicine experiences in Equestrian, Women’s Basketball, Volleyball, and Football. Within these clinicals, she assisted in data collection and analysis for post-concussion recovery, ACL return to play, and balance strategies for those with Multiple Sclerosis. Brooks received the Dr. Marion Hubert, Soule, and Dr. Butch Mulherin awards for distinguished work ethic, promoting physical activity amongst girls and women, and her commitment to the field of Athletic Training.
Brooks will become a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapist

This Black women is an example of professionalism, humbleness and pure heart. Amanda Robinson is definitely not an individual that looks for credit or recognition, but I am always amazed at where God continues to place Amanda, even in the most challenging and concerning situations.
I am not surprised that Keyonte Johnson thanked her among many of the other kind hearted allied health professionals working to save his life. She continues to make me proud to be a Black woman in this Athletic Training profession.

This shout out is long over due, but its never too late. My amazing Dean was the keynote speaker, and represented for the U. Dr. Laura Kohn-Wood provided an authentic, sound perspective regarding Race, Ethnicity, Culture and Promotion of Strengths. She dropped some serious PEARLS I look forward to assess and apply for the new year.
