Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Andy Walsh | Religion Department

"I felt called to teaching rather than preaching."

For Dr. Andy Walsh, a passion for religion and philosophy began with curiosity. Raised in a home that was spiritual but not deeply religious, he became fascinated by the historical and critical study of religion during his undergraduate years as a philosophy major. "I began to see religious people across the spectrum. Some seemed self-serving, but others seemed to genuinely care about every person they met." That curiosity eventually led him to seminary, then to a Ph.D., and ultimately to a career in higher education.

After teaching at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Dr. Walsh was drawn back to the close-knit environment of a liberal arts college and joined Culver-Stockton College in 2001. Over the years, he has taught dozens of courses ranging from Hebrew Bible, World Religions, Ethics, and Philosophy of Religion to unique classes such as The Bible and Immigration, Religion and Politics in the Contemporary United States, and Interfaith Leadership. He has also led travel courses and study abroad experiences in Greece, Italy, and Egypt.

His advice for students is this: "Your ability to ask good questions is more important than your ability to answer the questions posed by others."

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Walsh enjoys spending time with his family and friends,hiking with his wife Tammy, running his dog Koda, reading, listening to music, and even writing song lyrics. A fun fact: "I am really funny! Most people don't know this because I only share the dad jokes."

Dr. Walsh believes faculty help shape campus culture both inside and outside the classroom, whether that's through travel study, athletics, worship services, or simple showing up to support students in the activities they love.

Our faith tradition calls us to see the dignity in every person, and we take that seriously. This image from the 1942 Culver-Stockton College yearbook offers an early glimpse of that of commitment.

This month, we honor both Pride Month and Juneteenth, two observances rooted in the human pursuit of freedom, belonging, and equality. As a Disciples of Christ institution, we are guided by a tradition that is open and affirming, anti-racist, and committed to welcoming all people as they are.

Happy National Best Friends Day on the Hill!

Some of the most meaningful parts of college aren't found in the classroom. They're found in the friendships that make the Hill feel like home.

From late-night study sessions and game days to campus events and everyday moments, the people you meet here often become lifelong friends. The memories you create together, the challenges you overcome, and the support you give one another can last far beyond graduation.

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Kelli Stiles | Psychology Department

Dr. Kelli Stiles' journey into psychology began during her first career as a psychiatric nurse. "While earning my RN degree, I found the field of psychology fascinating and the rotation that just 'clicked' for me."

That passion grew into a career focused on helping others through a whole mind, body, and spirit approach while working with individuals ranging in age from 3 to over 100 years old. After moving to the area with her family, Dr. Stiles enrolled at Culver-Stockton to pursue another degree.

"I knew Culver-Stockton would be my home. The psychology program was solid, and I really felt C-SC aligned with my values of helping others."

Although she originally planned to return to the private sector after graduate school, an opportunity to become an adjunct professor at Culver-Stockton changed her mind. "Once here as an instructor, I found I really liked connecting with the students and helping them find their own path."

Dr. Stiles teaches courses including Lifespan Development, Abnormal Psychology, History of Psychology, and special topics such as Psychology of Cults, Missing and Exploited Children, and the Psychology of Tattoos. Her message to students is: "Never stop learning, never stop critically thinking, and never stop asking why."

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Stiles enjoys reading, spending time with family, and hanging out with her two cats, River Kwai and Natasha Romanov. A fun fact that she likes to share is that she didn't discover her love for science fiction writing until adulthood.

Dr. Stiles believes that faculty help shape campus culture by encouraging students to think critically, question beliefs, and know they are always part of the Wildcat family.
