When COVID-19 hit North Carolina, the Duke Kannapolis team and the MURDOCK Study Community Registry and Biorepository played a critical role in one of the state’s earliest large-scale research efforts.

Within weeks, the team transformed an empty bank parking lot into a drive-through enrollment site, keeping participants and staff safe while collecting vital samples.

Thanks to creativity, teamwork, and strong community partnerships, Duke Kannapolis enrolled 1,400 participants, the most of any site, and helped generate data that informed real-life decisions during a time of uncertainty.

The Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute mourns the passing of David H. Murdock, a distinguished philanthropist whose $35 million gift established the MURDOCK Study in Kannapolis, NC.

Mr. Murdock’s investment in biomedical research laid the foundation for a longitudinal study that has engaged over 12,000 participants and continues to drive innovation in disease reclassification and health outcomes.

“His legacy lives on through the thousands of lives impacted by this research,” said Dr. Svati Shah, principal investigator of the study.

We are grateful for his enduring contributions to science and public health.

👋 Meet Stephen. A retired researcher who worked in infectious disease, microbiology, and immunology, Stephen knows it can be hard for studies to get volunteers.

“I felt that I better put my money where my mouth is. I’ve enrolled in dozens of clinical studies and trials,” he said. “It’s something that I can do.”

When he developed low back pain, he joined another — the BACk Study. Pain research is especially meaningful to Stephen, who volunteers with people who live with spinal cord injuries and often endure pain daily.

“If there is something that I can do that will help people recover from pain or prevent it in the first place, I want to continue to move the ball forward,” he said. “Big things happen with small steps.”

When he is not coaching and volunteering, Stephen enjoys backpacking and back country travel.

👋 Meet Joy. Ever since Duke opened a research site in Kannapolis years ago, she has signed up for studies. So far, Joy has participated in the MURDOCK Study, a study about preventing Alzheimer’s disease, and now the BACk Study.

The first time she heard about BACk, Joy could not apply because her back didn’t hurt.

“But the second time they reached out, my back had been hurting, and I was able to join the study,” she said. "If I can make a difference and add to the data, I wanted to do that.”

An accountant for small business in Charlotte started by her grandfather, Joy enjoys spending time with her husband and their beloved dog and cat.

👋 Meet Jessa. Simply stated, she believes in scientific research. When her low back started to hurt, Jessa joined the BACk Study to help Duke researchers better understand pain.

“A friend sent me the study, and it seemed like a low-stress way to participate in our community,” Jessa said.

A licensed general contractor, Jessa owns a small construction company. She loves sustainability and reuse, so you can often find her making small projects out of construction leftovers. When she’s not working, Jessa enjoys hiking, reading, and live music.
