The Unequal Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Infant Health: Research and Data Infrastructure

The COVID pandemic has taken a large toll on population health and wellbeing. We examine consequences of prenatal exposure for infant health, through which the pandemic may have lasting intergenerational effects. We consider multiple pathways by which the pandemic shaped birth outcomes and examine socioeconomic disparities in these consequences. Analysis of more than 3.5 million birth records in California with universal information on COVID infection during pregnancy reveals deep inequalities in maternal infection by education, race/ethnicity, and place-based socioeconomic disadvantage. Maternal COVID infection, in turn, predicts an increase in the probability of preterm birth by about 34 percent. At the population level, a surprising decline in preterm birth during the first months of the pandemic was followed by an increase in preterm birth during the surge in COVID infections in the winter of 2021. The early-pandemic decline in preterm birth largely benefitted mothers with college education. In contrast, the increase in preterm birth during the winter surge in infections only affected mothers with low levels of schooling. The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to exacerbate U.S. inequality in multiple ways. Our findings suggest a particularly enduring pathway: the long-term legacy of prenatal exposure to an unequal pandemic environment. As the pandemic has progressed, an increasingly important axis of inequality is vaccination against COVID. Vaccine hesitancy is high among pregnant persons, particularly among the poor, racial/ethnic minorities, and those living in rural areas.

The purpose of this fund is to provide financial support to student-led projects aimed at improving students’ mental health and wellbeing on campus. Campus & Student Life will be providing $10,000 for the initial funding cycle. All currently enrolled University of Chicago students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional students) are eligible to apply for funding.

Katherine Buse, IFK Postdoctoral researcher discusses the ways that climate models mediate time, space, and events, exploring the implications for humanistic understandings of planetary climate. The peculiarities of early general circulation models developed by Nobel Laureate Syukuro Manabe in the 1960s and 70s help to illustrate the form of the climate model as media. Theoretical and computational decisions about how land, water, and air interact give each model its own relationship to (or regime of) temporality, causality, and reality. Theories of digital media and science fiction, each of which engages with rules of transformation and change over time, can help develop a lexicon for describing these regimes. The talk shows that climate models deliberately create a spacetime of immerselessness, or the refusal of phenomenological engagement. Considering climate models through the lens of science fiction media can shed new light on the idea that planetary phenomena like global climate change are inaccessible to humanistic perspectives.

This film brings together soldiers, scholars, gangsters, musicians and politicians from the Southeast side’s past and present. This is more than just history; this is a hands-on exploration of what it felt like to live here. See how the streets were then, and how they've evolved to what they are now.

Join us on an immersive experience as we engage in elements of documentary film, live narration, and musical performances. Music is a major element of this story, and all of the songs for the soundtrack were written by writer/director Steven Walsh and his grandfather, Roger "Coco" Gomez, and will be performed live at this event!
