I’ve been reflecting on our recent Sam Houston State faculty quintet visits around Houston, and could not be more appreciative of the opportunity to share our music and to meet new teachers and students.

It was definitely a highlight to play at one of my former students’ schools!

I asked Luis about his first year teacher experience and think it’s definitely worth sharing his thoughts…

From Luis:

1. Meet students exactly where they are.
It is so important to learn how to explain what you want your students to do on their instruments in the simplest terms. Because they don't know as much as you do, you have to break concepts down to their level. The "curse of knowledge" is real—never take the basics for granted!

2. Master the characteristic sound of EVERY instrument. You aren't just teaching your primary instrument anymore; you teach them all. Knowing how to produce a high-quality sound on every instrument—and knowing exactly what you want each section to sound like—is critical to fixing tonal issues on the fly.

3. Embrace the learning curve (for them and you). You are dealing with young musicians, so it is completely okay if they don't get a concept or play a line perfectly the first time. Our job isn't just to demand perfection, but to meet them where they are and push them to improve by teaching them how to self-evaluate and recognize what they need to work on.

My standout takeaway from year one:

The journey to contest and UIL evaluation can be incredibly stressful, but at the end of the day, student growth is the result that truly matters. If your kids are improving as musicians and human beings, you are winning.

It was such an honor to celebrate the “3 Amigos” last weekend! I enjoyed every minute of all the socializing, story telling, music making, and lots of hugs (and tears❤️)!

I was super lucky to have the opportunity to play for Mr. P (and the other “Mr. P” Gene Pokorny) when he came through my hometown of Columbia, SC with the Summit Brass. A year later I was a freshman at Indiana with a brand new Getzen Canadian Brass tuba purchased from David Fedderly.

Mr. P continues to be such an important part of my life as a mentor and friend. I hope I can give my students just half of what he’s given us!

Although I’ve never had a lesson with R. Winston Morris, like many others I’ve benefited from his numerous publications and certainly know many of his fabulous students. He is a walking encyclopedia of the tuba and always has a joke for me as a fellow South Carolinian🤣

Of course it was amazing to see all the love for Jim Self! Very few have filled their life with as much music and creativity as he did!

It was a weekend that I will never forget!
