Mudders gathered outside Platt last week for the annual Fall Club Fair. Representatives from clubs like Mudd Tabletop Games, the Muddraker, Adaptive Design at Mudd, Mudd Amateur Rocketry Club and more showed up to entice their classmates to join and participate in all that student clubs have to offer. Last week, Harvey Mudd College’s community met in Galileo Hall to kick off the 2026-2027 academic year with Convocation.

Speakers included Harvey Mudd President Harriet Nembhard, Dean of Faculty Karl Haushalter and mathematics professor Francis Su. A string quartet led by HMC biology professor Danae Schulz performed “Alla danza tedesca” from Beethoven's String Quartet No. 13, Op. 130. Two Mudders were recognized for their accomplishments: Rachel Garton ’29 was awarded the Platt Prize, and Jackson Giumarra ’29 was awarded the First-Year Writing Prize for his paper “The New(man) Sublime: Barnett Newman's Transformation of the Sublime Experience.”

Convocation ended with the College's annual “tunnel of applause,” where faculty and staff applaud first years on beginning their college careers.

The generous contribution, valued at approximately $200,000, consists of industry-grade oscilloscopes, advanced power supplies and specialized design and simulation software that will fundamentally upgrade the College’s engineering laboratories. Harvey Mudd College computer science professor George Montañez was awarded the Best Oral Presentation honor in the Trustworthy and Explainable AI session at the 2026 International Conference on Advance Machine Learning and Data Science in Osaka, Japan. What can years of preparation and a community that looks out for one another mean when disaster strikes? Harvey Mudd College alumna Mala Arthur ’82 knows firsthand.

When the Eaton Fire swept through the San Gabriel Valley in January 2025, Arthur's Pasadena Glen home and her Altadena rental property both survived. For years, she had helped her neighbors prepare for wildfire through training, evacuation drills, workshops and fire-prevention efforts.

Developed by the Department of Mathematics in collaboration with the College's Hixon Center for Climate and the Environment, the interdisciplinary program aims to equip the next generation of STEM leaders with the mathematical fluency required to model, analyze and address the complexities of a changing planet.
