SC Attorney General Quashes Outdoor Event "Moratorium" at USC
The South Carolina Assistant Attorney General just told USC: you cannot shut down outdoor debates. This is a huge win for free expression on campus. Universities should be the place where tough conversations happen, not where administrators pick and choose which voices get heard.
Continuing the debate on college campuses is what Charlie Kirk would have wanted.
Per ABC 15 News:
"South Carolina Attorney Alan Wilson is speaking out after the U.S. Department of Justice issued a letter alleging the University of South Carolina would be canceling "controversial" outdoor events for the remainder of the semester.
Assistant U.S. AG Harmeet Dhillon issued a letter on Friday demanding that the University of South Carolina continue outdoor debates in the wake of Charlie Kirk's death following the allegations.
She claimed President Michael Amiridis told USC's Turning Point USA Chapter and Uncensored America they can't have their table debates outside.
'U of SC—act unwise, get a surprise! Thank you for your attention to this matter.'
The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice said they received 'troubling allegations' concerning an alleged meeting between USC administrators and student leaders from campus chapters of Turning Point USA and Uncensored America.
They claimed administrators informed the students that a decision has been made that "controversial speakers and activities will no longer happen outside for the rest of the semester."
Dhillon says administrators labelled Charlie Kirk as a "known disrupter to a population," to which no clarification was given when asked, or a definition of "controversial."
The Civil Rights Division says it was concerned that such a policy violates the First Amendment.
They urged the university to immediately eliminate any unconstitutional policies and reaffirm its support for outdoor expressive activities to promote the peaceful exchange of ideas Charlie Kirk championed."
