Our Story
Recognized by the American Sociological Association as a national leader in quality sociological training, Texas A&M's Sociology Program offers both undergraduate and graduates an enriching and intellectually stimulating academic experience. Our department helps students prepare for careers in research and teaching in higher education, research and policy development in both private and public sectors. Faculty offers courses in crime, law, & punishment; culture; demography; organizational, political, and economic sociology; race, class & gender; and social psychology. For our undergraduates, some courses include hands-on service-learning opportunities in which students connect service and/or research in the community with course material. Majors seeking to enter applied fields will further benefit from our highly praised internship program. For graduate students, our program has advantages that come with large size. With more than 30 graduate faculty, the student-faculty ratio of about 2.1 is favorable. Thus, students have excellent opportunities to assist faculty on research projects and develop their our research programs under faculty supervision. Our program is designed to lead to completion of both the master’s and doctoral degrees within five years.
Texas A&M Sociology has distinguished faculty and consistently ranks in the top 50 US departments of sociology according to the US News & World Report. Individual faculty members have won numerous international, national, and regional awards for their research and publications, including multiple distinguished book and article awards from ASA and lifetime achievement awards to include ASA Founder’s Award, the WEB Du Bois Award, and the Cooley-Mead Award. We are particularly committed to promoting diversity of ethnic, gender, and class backgrounds of our faculty, students, and fields of study.
