Metro East Community Air Project (MECAP) Louis Region. MECAP is part of Action Research Illinois (ARI), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Promoting community-based efforts to address air pollution by integrating community engagement, education programs, and air monitoring research over the next three years. ness at the neighborhood level to the health risks associated with air pollution, while providing community with the tools to address local air quality and public health concerns. Over the next three years, MECAP hopes to:
-Establish a solid foundation for citizen activism that will sustain the project as a community led 501(c)3 organization.

-Draw awareness to regional and local air quality issues and how they relate to public health.

-Foster positive working relationships with citizens, health agencies, community organizations and government representatives working on air pollution and health issues in the Metro East.

-Contribute to joint community initiatives to address air quality and public health.

General information

While air quality has improved over the years, unhealthy air still poses a threat to the health of residents throughout the St. Louis Metro Area. Residents of the Metro East are exposed to an assortment of air transmitted pollutants with varying health impacts. The region is home to numerous industrial operations, and has an extensive network of city roads and interstate. The Metro East has long exceeded national air quality standards for ozone and fine particulates (smog and soot). It is well recognized that air pollution negatively impacts public health and quality of life.
