It is with profound sorrow that we share the loss of Sara Ryung Clement, Design ’05, on June 13. Sara passed away surrounded by love at her home in Minneapolis after a long illness. We celebrate her extraordinary body of work as a scenic and costume designer at theaters across the country and her legacy as an educator most recently at University of Minnesota. We extend our deepest sympathy to her partner and family and know that she will be greatly missed by a far-flung constellation of friends, colleagues and students.

Highlighting Yung-Hung Sung

Yung-Hung is a lighting AND scenic designer from our class of 2025. He has collaborated with numerous theatre artists and companies. With over 90 productions, his design footprints have already been seen around several nations/festivals and major theaters in Taiwan, such as the National Theater of Taiwan, National Taichung Theater, National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts. Also, Edinburgh International Festival Fringe (UK), Proyector Festival (Spain), Beijing Dance Festival, Shanghai International Festival of Arts (China), Migration Matters Festival (UK), ChangMu Performing Arts Festival (South Korea), Festival of Avignon Off (France), etc. Selected awards include Ten Lines of Poetry to NK with Neo-Classic Chamber Ensemble which received Bronze for Professional Lighting Design at the World Stage Design Exhibition 2022 in Calgary, Canada.

Yung-Hung finds the essence of live performance in its direct, multi-dimensional impact on perceivers. Through scenography he dissects the human condition, sparks inner dialogue, and exposes evasive conflicts, convinced that the emotional bond between performers and audience transcends sophisticated words, concepts, and visual spectacle—indeed, a thought-provoking piece can unfold on a bare stage. “Scenography exists only when it helps tell a story better.”

Introducing Doaa Ouf

Doaa is a multidisciplinary artist from Cairo pursuing a degree in projection design as a part of the class of 2025. Her work seamlessly integrates her expansive experiences to create compelling, narratively immersive, and deeply resonant storytelling. She specializes in new works and productions that blend dynamic visuals and sound to heighten storytelling, creating multisensory theatrical experiences.

While at DGSD Doaa has earned the nickname “Class Prez” from her cohort for her unwavering leadership in the theater and on the volleyball court. Doaa is proud to have served as the Artistic Director for Yale Cabaret’s 56th season, Sandbox, alongside fellow designer Kyle Stamm. Her thesis presentation Tools of Memory marked the 20th production she’s worked on as a director, producer, or designer in the Yale Cabaret space (not including the productions produced under Sandbox!).

Congratulations! Costume and scenic designer Arthur Wilson (’25) is the 2025 Burry Fredrik Design Fellow and will receive a $10,000 prize from the Burry Fredrik Foundation. Committed to supporting the careers of all graduates of the Design Program of David Geffen School of Drama, the foundation underwrites a designer’s fee the first time they work at any of Connecticut’s producing theaters within two years of graduation. In 2024, the Foundation make 15 such grants for productions at Collective Consciousness Theatre, Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center, Hartford Stage Company, Playhouse Theatre Group, and TheaterWorks Hartford.
