The Mashburn Center for Learning, with a grant from the College of Education (Drs. Amy Thompson and Crystal Voegele), will present a 2-hour webinar: Fundamentals of Sentence Writing Tuesday, September 29th from 4:30-6:30 PM central time. CEUs will be available.

The PD is at no cost, but you will need to order the materials linked on the attached flyer.

The Department of Elementary, Literacy, and Special Education had their annual retreat this past month in the Reading Room at UCA's Windgate Center. Faculty began the day with an "old school teacher fashion show". Our two winners of best dressed teacher from the years past were Ms. Dee Dee Cain and Dr. Brandy Walthall. Faculty worked together to create department goals aligned with the UCA strategic plan, enjoyed a great Asian-infused lunch from Aramark, spent time together in collaboration, and had a team-building activity with Dr. Amy Hawkins.

The College of Education would like to extend their utmost appreciation to Teri Cox (College of Education Dean's Advisory Council member) and Marshall Road Church in Jacksonville, AR for their generous donation to the College of Education food pantry. Teri and her church provided a variety of meal kits for students in need.

Huge congratulations to Michael Gassaway, a Spring 2023 graduate of the UCA Middle Level Education Program, who was recently awarded the New Mexico Medal of Merit!

Michael was recognized for his outstanding work as an instructor with the New Mexico Governor’s Summer ChalleNGe Program in Roswell. Presented by Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar on behalf of the Governor, this honor celebrates dedicated educators who helped middle school students make remarkable gains in reading and mathematics through supportive mentorship and academic instruction.

Michael is currently continuing his passion for teaching as an educator with the Bernalillo School District in New Mexico.

Today, we remember Dolly Parton—a legendary entertainer whose greatest legacy may be the countless young lives she inspired through education and literacy.

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, she helped put millions of books into the hands of children, nurturing a love of reading and opening doors to lifelong learning.

Her belief in the power of a book—and in every child’s potential—will continue to inspire educators for generations to come. Thank you, Dolly, for helping the world dream a little bigger.
