The History Project at UC Davis

The UC Davis History Project provides discipline-specific professional learning for history and social science teachers. We are part of the UC Davis Department of History and affiliated with the California Subject Matter Project commissioned by the California State Legislature to support professional growth and leadership development for teachers in each discipline. Our programs:

History Project programs are grounded current research; they are the product of collaboration in our community of history educators, kindergarten through university. Academic historians from UC Davis and other area colleges and universities immerse teachers in the latest scholarship, enlivening the historic content by adding depth, making connections, and providing sources. Project leaders facilitate the study and application of the best practices. Teachers collaborate in small groups and conduct research to develop curriculum and plan to implement the most effective instructional strategies. The results: increased student literacy and achievement as
documented in multiple evaluations using quasi-experimental design. Schools, districts, and county offices of education contract with The History Project to provide specific services that expand teachers’ content knowledge, instructional repertoire, and reflective practices.
