MGI researchers Ritam Sinha, Victor DiRita, and colleagues have made a fundamental discovery about Campylobacter Jejuni, or "Campy," which may lead to a non-antibiotic treatment. It turns out that our body's immune response creates the perfect environment for Campy to grow. Their paper was published in PNAS.

Dr. Kirstin Parkin was awarded the 2024 CHM Green Apple Award at last Saturday's CHM Ball. This award is student-selected and honors a faculty member who has had a significant positive impact on the students' academic experience.

This summer, 20 young Brazilian physicians came to MGI for a 3-day seminar in diagnostic dermatology as part of an 18-year partnership between MSU and the Brazilian Superior Institute of Medicine (ISMD) . The class was led by MGI Professor Dr. Leo Mendoza, the director of the ISMD - Dr. Raquel Vilela (ISMD director), and Dr. Alvaro C. Laga of Harvard. The seminar was sponsored by MGI.

Welcome to MGI's newest Fulbright Scholar, Kefas Malgwi!

Kefas hails from Nigeria. He is trained as a veterinarian, with an interest in pharmacology. His research at MSU will explore anti-microbial discovery to combat Campylobacter jejuni, a human pathogen that is commonly found in the g.i. tract of poultry, which are the major source of human infection. Kefas' work will work jointly in Victor DiRita's and Shannon Manning's labs, taking advantage of Dr. Manning's large collection of Campylobacter isolates from a variety of sources.

Jasper Gomez, an MGI doctoral candidate in Chris Waters' lab, was awarded an NIH Kirschstein NRSA Fellowship. This three-year award supports promising doctoral candidates who are conducting their dissertation research in a scientific health-related field.

“The overall goal of my research is to understand how viruses interact with bacteria using Vibrio cholerae. These interactions can lead us to discover new genetic tools and make better and more effective phage therapeutics,” Gomez said. “Phages are viruses that infect bacteria specifically, and these viruses are able to kill their bacterial host – they’re really good at doing what antibiotics do. So, phage therapy is a great alternative to combat antibiotic resistance.”

Dr. Sean Crosson, Rudolph Hugh Endowed Chair in the Department of Microbiology, Genetics, and Immunology, has been named recipient of the 2024 Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence. He is being recognized for his contributions to our fundamental understanding of pathogens belonging to the Brucella genus.

The nationally recognized award, funded by Zoetis since 1963, honors one researcher at each US veterinary college for innovative studies that have advanced the scientific standing of veterinary medicine.

Brucellosis is a significant and deadly disease in a variety of livestock animals and wildlife, and in humans.

A warm welcome to MGI's newest Associate Professor, Dr. Annie Rowe, who joins us from Univ. of Cincinnati where she was an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Biological Sciences.

Dr. Rowe received her PhD in Microbiology with minors in Environmental Engineering and Genomics from Cornell University. After her graduate work, she carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Southern California and, briefly, at University of Tokyo in Japan. She studies microbial interactions in a variety of systems, both applied and environmental, using approaches from a diverse set of disciplines.

Welcome to Dr. Wei Wang! Dr. Wang is joining us as an Assistant Professor. She comes from the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison where she was a postdoctoral researcher after earning her PhD there in Cellular and Molecular Pathology.
