The mission of the Games for Entertainment and Learning (GEL) Lab at Michigan State University is to design innovative prototypes, techniques, and complete games for entertainment and learning and to advance state of the art knowledge about social and individual effects of digital games. The GEL Lab is an association of game research and design faculty and students, primarily in the College of Com

munication Arts and Sciences. The lab focuses on externally funded research and development work and employs graduate and undergraduate students.

Our department seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member to serve as Director of our Serious Games Certificate (SGC) program while continuing their research, publication, and teaching efforts. We welcome applications from emerging and established scholars at the Assistant or Associate rank who have sufficient relevant experience in Game Studies with terminal degrees from a related discipline, such as anthropology, communication, computer science, design, engineering, history, human-computer interaction, human-machine communication, information science, psychology, science & technology studies, sociology, or socio-technical systems. Scholars who examine socially-relevant topics (e.g., diversity, equity, inclusion, race, class, gender, sexuality, age, education, health, and disability) and their relationship to games are especially encouraged to apply. Expected start date is August 15, 2023.

Whether designed to entertain or to achieve more "serious" purposes, games, virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality have the potential to impact players' beliefs, knowledge, attitudes, emotions, cognitive abilities, physical and mental health, and behavior.
