Comment Policy:
Thank you for liking the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society page. This page was created to provide an open dialogue among Phi Theta Kappa members, advisors, alumni and staff, as well as to provide up-to-date information on what our organization has to offer to current and potential members. Participation on the Phi Theta Kappa page is not a right, but an opportunity. Please treat your Facebook interaction seriously and with respect for the Society and others at all times. If you fail to comply with the guidelines listed below, Phi Theta Kappa reserves the right to delete your posts and/or ban you from our site. The site is a public forum but is property of Phi Theta Kappa.
1. Social media participation starts with the Phi Theta Kappa Mission. When participating on the Phi Theta Kappa page (social media), we expect that participants always interact by representing the purpose of our Phi Theta Kappa mission at all times. Phi Theta Kappa’s mission is two-fold:
(1) to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students;
(2) to provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
2. Phi Theta Kappa expects all who interact on our page to exercise personal responsibility. This includes not violating the trust of those with whom you are engaging.
3. Be honest and transparent. All statements must be true and not misleading; all claims must be substantiated. If you make a mistake, admit it. Never represent yourself or Phi Theta Kappa in a false or misleading way. Make it clear to others that your posts do not represent the views and opinions of Phi Theta Kappa. Always make your role in Phi Theta Kappa clear (member, potential member, officer, advisor). Make sure your efforts to be honest and transparent don’t violate the privacy and confidentiality of others. By virtue of identifying yourself as being associated with the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society within a social network, you are now connected to your academic colleagues, educational institution and Phi Theta Kappa members.
4. Post meaningful, respectful comments. The page is not a place to air grievances. No spam, advertising or remarks that are off-topic or offensive will be allowed. What you write is ultimately your responsibility and requires judgment. If your grievance is a local issue please contact your chapter advisor directly. If you have a problem with member benefits, Society programs, or a headquarters issue, please contact Phi Theta Kappa directly at 1-800-946-9995 and speak with the appropriate staff member.
5. Do not post excessively. Although Phi Theta Kappa wants you to participate regularly on the Facebook (social media) page, it is not a personal page and should not be used as one. Use common sense and do not post more than an average of once a day. Do not lead others to believe you represent Phi Theta Kappa officially.
6. Handle disagreements politely and with extreme care. When disagreeing with the opinions of others, keep it appropriate and polite. If you find yourself in a situation online that is becoming antagonistic, disengage from the dialogue in a polite manner that reflects well on Phi Theta Kappa. If the interaction has become offensive, please report it to the Phi Theta Kappa Facebook staff.
7. Do not denigrate others, Phi Theta Kappa, its competitors, and/or specific organizations or institutions. Behave diplomatically and try to frame what you write to invite differing points of view without inflaming others. Be careful and considerate. Once the words are out there, you can’t get them back. And once an inflammatory discussion gets going, it’s hard to stop.
8. Never participate in crisis situation discussion. Do not participate when the topic being discussed may be considered a crisis situation. Please report crisis topics to the Phi Theta Kappa Facebook staff.
9. Be smart and protect your privacy and confidential information. What you publish is widely accessible and will be around for a long time, so consider the content carefully. The Internet has a long memory.
10. Do not open “official” Phi Theta Kappa social media accounts. Do not create Facebook (social media) accounts that claim to officially represent or that could be interpreted as representing Phi Theta Kappa. Do not use official Phi Theta Kappa artwork and/or logos. See use policy at http://www.ptk.org/about/graphics. Disclaimer: Phi Theta Kappa cannot endorse commercial, individual or political interests, products or services. This includes but is not limited to any members or advisors seeking elected positions within Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society or its chapters and regions.
