Get to know a little more than you did before about our third year brother, John Compton in this second installment of Theta Mu Interviews.
⬇️⬇️⬇️
1) Tell me a bit about yourself. What are you studying? Do you like it at Elmhurst?
My name is John Compton, I am a junior here at Elmhurst from Lexington, Kentucky. I am majoring in Urban Studies and GIS, and I love learning about history and studying transportation. Elmhurst was in my top three schools after I did research, and after visiting the campus and obtaining the Honors Program Scholarship it became my number one. I enjoy the location, architecture, and people on campus, as well as the small class sizes, so overall I do like it at Elmhurst.
2) How did you get introduced to ATO? What made you decide to Rush?
I wanted to get more involved in campus and in the community but didn’t know what I wanted to do or what organizations I felt like I would enjoy joining. My roommate, Zac Avery, mentioned that he was going to try out meeting the fraternities and I decided it would be a good idea to meet some of the guys as well. We went to several functions and both decided that ATO was the fit that we wanted in our college experience.
3) How do you feel ATO has impacted your college experience or you in general?
Before ATO I didn’t really do anything on campus besides go to class and live here, I would always look towards the city for off-campus activities and things to do with my very small, close-knit group of friends. Now that I have ATO, I have a much wider and diverse group of friends that all enjoy one another but might not have hung out otherwise. There are plenty of people to wave to and have socially distant hangouts with because of my fraternity, so I feel like it has had a very positive impact.
4) Outside of the fraternity, what are some other organizations you are a part of on campus?
I am a part of the Elmhurst University Honors Program and used to be involved in the music program. One of the main reasons that I joined ATO was to increase my visibility and involvement in campus life!
5) How do you like to spend your free time?
As my major and interests are in urban studies and urban planning, one of my favorite pastimes is to explore Chicagoland by train or by car and just see the sights. Driving down I-290 or Lakeshore Drive to get to these interesting little places, restaurants, parks, and bakeries is how I’d spend my free time. I also enjoy doing research on the history of cities and various transportation networks across the country.
6) What are some goals you have after you graduate?
After I graduate, I would like to get an Urban Planning job regarding either historical preservation and revitalization or transportation design and improvement. I would like to work east of the Mississippi River, preferably in a rust belt city like Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, or Pittsburgh where I could commute to work by rail instead of by car.
7) What is something you are looking forward to this school year – be it ATO related or otherwise?
As Covid-19 has prevented most everyone from doing a lot of the things they were looking forward too, this year I’m excited to use this time to keep my grades up, cool it on the couch, and have small hangouts with my friends.😎
8. How are you adjusting to the social distancing guidelines put in place on campus and their effects on the learning experience?
I had never taken an online class in my life before this semester, and this year all four of my classes are completely online. While it is defiantly harder to focus and be attentive in class and with due dates, as long as you reach out for help when you are stuck and remind yourself that this is still school and you’re still getting graded, it is not impossible. Since I live and eat in a campus house and not in a dorm, I have not had to adjust too drastically other than wearing a mask in the dining hall and not having large hangouts.
9) What is the first think you plan to do after the pandemic?
The first thing I plan to do after the pandemic is ride the L around everywhere since I haven’t all year and eat inside at some extremely good restaurants. I would also like to go on several vacations back to Europe and around the US, but the thickness of my wallet indicates that riding the L around will be much more likely.
10) Any final comments you want to give, closing statements?
Even though this year has been chaos, I want to thank my friends and my ATO brothers for still making it fun!
