"For the past 19 years, Peace Over Violence has run its Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a r**e conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her ra**st remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault." -denimdayinfo.org

We hope that you will join us for the 11th annual Take Back the Night TOMORROW (Wednesday 4/18) on Hammond Plaza (in between Hammond and Thompson) at 7p.m.!
The rain location will be the Hammond Main Lounge.

For over a decade, the FSU community has come together at this event to promote sexual violence awareness and communicate a message not only of intolerance for any and all acts of violence, but also of compassion and support for those who have been impacted by such violence. The event gives the opportunity for members of our community to share their stories in a supportive space, access resources, and demonstrate FSU's continued commitment to stand against sexual violence in our community and beyond.

Looking forward to coming together again as a community and hope to see you all there!

Please take a moment to visit the What Were You Wearing: Survivor Art Installation located on the 1st Floor of Hammond. It will be on display April 13th - April 22nd.

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Feminist Conversations, together with Pathways for Change, the Fitchburg Anti-Violence Education (FAVE) program, and FAVE club, present the Fitchburg State University version of this exhibit. It was made possible by a collaboration with the University of Kansas and the project was originally pioneered at the University of Arkansas in 2013.

The stories used were donated by survivors and used with their consent. Our replicas of the outfits described are displayed to honor those courageous enough to share their stories.

This installation seeks to challenge a pervasive r**e culture myth surrounding clothing and its alleged role in sexual violence. The question, "what were you wearing?" has become all too familiar to many survivors. This question carries with it the hurtful and damaging implication that survivors are somehow to blame for their experience of sexual assault. It is our hope that this art installation will allow viewers to not only reflect upon the detrimental consequences of this r**e culture myth, but also start a conversation regarding the ways in which we can instead empower survivors.

We thank you for your continued support of initiatives that align with our community's commitment to take a stand against sexual violence.

Join us for FSU’s 11th annual Take Back the Night event!!
(4/18/18 at 7p.m. on Hammond Plaza in between Thompson and Hammond)

There are several ways for you to get involved!

Each year for the past decade, the FSU community has come together at this event to promote sexual violence awareness and communicate a message not only of intolerance for any and all acts of violence, but also of compassion and support for those who have been affected by such violence. The event gives the opportunity for members of our community to share their stories in a supportive space, receive resources, and demonstrate FSU's continued commitment to stand against sexual violence in our community and beyond.

We are looking for students who would be willing to speak at the event or submit artwork to be displayed during the event. We realize that there are many ways to share stories of survival as well as messages of strength and hope. We welcome you to do so in a way that feels most comfortable for you. This could include sharing your story, reading a story of another survivor, sharing a poem, singing a song, creating artwork, etc. If you are interested in speaking at the event, or if you have any questions about submitting artwork, please reach out to Amanda Sapienza in the Counseling Services Office at [email protected], who will be able to discuss your ideas with you, and help you to develop something that you feel comfortable sharing.

*Artwork can be submitted to Counseling Services (Hammond 317) and can be completely anonymous.

Looking forward to coming together again as a community and hope to see you all there!
