Today, we hosted participants in the UNT Health Institute for Translational Research and the NTERI summer research program. NTERI’s Dr. Hongli Wu and Dr. Ankita Jaykumar gave exciting presentations on AI and oculomics in neuroscience, and ITR’s Antonio Casas provided a presentation on HABS-HD data. After the presentations, students toured both the ITR and NTERI labs.

June is Cataract Awareness Month. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. This is why it is important to remain up to date on eye screenings and preventative care, as cataracts are often easier to treat early in the process.

We recently sat down with Dr. Hongli Wu, associate director of graduate education and research, and professor, pharmaceutical sciences at UNT Health, and NTERI faculty, to learn more about cataracts and future advances in the treatment of cataracts.

Calvin Brooks, a student in Dr. Raghu Krishnamoorthy's lab, recently presented on the impacts of the visual system on aviation to Civil Air Patrol cadets. The Civil Air Patrol is the Auxiliary to the U.S. Air Force, and, aside from providing volunteers for disaster relief efforts, it has a cadet program for teens that focuses on building leadership and STEM skills. Calvin has been teaching aerospace and STEM in the Civil Air Patrol - when he is not in the NTERI lab. NTERI helped to make Calvin's presentation possible.
