September is National Student Parent Month, and we’re celebrating the determination, resilience, and dreams of FCC’s student parents—including Abrian Cruz.

For Abrian, being a student parent means balancing classes, work, and family while building a future he once wasn’t sure he could achieve.

One of 246 student parents enrolled at FCC this fall, Abrian is pursuing an associate degree in psychology while working as a student parent mentor on campus. At the Family Study Space, he supports other student parents while also having a welcoming place to study and bring his four-year-old stepdaughter.

Abrian’s journey back to college wasn’t easy. After leaving the military, adjusting to civilian life, and struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic, he faced academic and personal challenges that led to several failed semesters. But with the support of his wife, a more stable home life, and a renewed sense of purpose, he returned to FCC and began moving forward.

“Returning to school can feel overwhelming, especially when you are balancing work, family, and everything else life brings,” said Abrian. “There will be difficult days, but there will also be moments that remind you why you started.”

Today, Abrian has earned a place on the Dean’s List multiple times and is working toward graduating in spring 2027. His long-term goal is to become a therapist and build a career in the mental health field.

Abrian’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your goals, and that raising a family and pursuing an education don’t have to be separate paths. “Every class I complete brings me one step closer to becoming the person I want to be, not just for myself, but for them,” said Abrian.

This September, we’re proud to celebrate Abrian and all of FCC’s student parents who are showing their families what perseverance, hard work, and education can make possible.

This summer, student Aaron Humes represented FCC by participating in the UMD Cyber-Physical Systems Engineering (CPSE) Jumpstart Your Engineering Career summer program.
