This is the Gonzaga University Chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). While also being a professional organization, SAE strives to give undergraduate and graduate engineering students the chance to work on real-world engineering projects through their competitions. The competition that Gonzaga has historically been a part of is the Aero Design Competition. Current Club Projects Incl

ude (But are not limited to):
-Modification of a 1990 Honda Civic to be entered in the Demolition Derby at the Spokane County Fair in September 2012.

-Design and construction of a radio controlled blimp (similar to what would be seen at a hockey/basketball game).

-Tear down and clean up of a lawn mower engine in order for students to learn about how a four stroke motor functions.

-We will help organize any engineering-related project that Gonzaga engineering students are interested in doing in order to gain a better understanding and hands-on knowledge of mechanical engineering. Club Officers

Can you notice anything that's missing? 🤔🤔🤔
We hacked off the rear end of HR4 today in preparation for the new designs we are working on. HR4.5 will be a development car used to test out two new rear suspension designs as well as our first in house designed gearbox. Stay tuned!

We took HR3 out to the 7-mile ORV park for the club’s first drive day a few weeks ago. There was a light drizzle going throughout the day, but that didn’t stop us from having an absolute blast sliding around in the mud. All the new students got their first chance to huck the car around and see what it is we are building towards with our new designs. The day ended in typical Baja fashion, with us breaking the car after clipping a tree with one of the front wheels. As much of a bummer as it is to break something, the knuckle is now a great visualization of failure due to both shear and bearing stress. This also gives us a great chance to go back and find ways to improve upon the old design. In the meantime, we finished welding together the busted knuckle so that we can at least have a rollable car that can be displayed until we machine a new knuckle.

The weather took a turn for the worse in California and the rock gardens were ripping wheels off left and right. We managed to snap both rear bearing carriers but worked hard as a team to get our car back out on the track both times 🧰💪 We managed to finish 16 laps for a result of 50th place! It may not sound like much but the course was so rough that 23 teams didn't even finish a single lap 😳 Given all the obstacles we faced, we're incredibly proud of the team for it's ability to pull together & for all the volunteers who cheered us through the rock gardens every time ❤️ @ Gorman, California
