George Washington is a legend for his leadership of Continental Army that defeated the British in the Revolutionary War. He is also held in high esteem as the first president of the United States.

An upcoming lecture at Tusculum University will explore another side of Washington that has not generated nearly as much attention. Dr. Timothy Holder, a history professor for Walters State Community College and Liberty University, will discuss "“The Faith of George Washington” Monday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in Chalmers Conference Center.

We look forward to Dr. Holder's insights about Washington. He will come to the event with a strong background as an author and speaker. He speaks more than 100 times a year to civic groups, churches, schools and other organizations, and “The Faith of George Washington” is one of the topics he offers on the lecture circuit. Additionally, Dr. Holder has written about 20 books, mostly about presidents and faith.

The presentation is free and is part of Tusculum's America 250/Tusculum 232 Celebration. We look forward to seeing you.

We invite the community to join us on campus Monday, Sept. 14, anytime from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. to visit the Freedom 250 Mobile Museum. The museum will be placed in the parking lot next to the Meen Center.

This will be a great opportunity for individuals to explore U.S. history with hands-on learning and attractive exhibits. The museum, a White House initiative as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary, is the size of a large tractor-trailer.

It features high-tech exhibits and multimedia storytelling. Visitors can explore America’s founding story, test their knowledge, digitally sign the Declaration of Independence and discover more about influential Americans featured on a Wall of Heroes.

A great morning discussing the impact of leadership in a rapidly changing world is available to community members during a master class Thursday, Sept. 24 at Tusculum University.

Keddrain "KD" Bowen, a 2003 graduate and successful businessman and community leader in the region will co-present “The Future-Ready Leader: Preparing Leaders for an AI-Driven World." David Hite, associate professor of business and director of Tusculum's Center for Free Enterprise and New Venture Creation, will join him for this motivating discussion in the Meen Center.

The event will focus on leadership, communication, innovation, adaptability, emotional intelligence and the way artificial intelligence is reshaping the workplace. Additionally, Bowen and Hite will reinforce that authentic leadership is more important than ever. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with leaders from across East Tennessee.

We encourage you to join us Thursday, Sept. 10, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. for the workshop “Get Hired with AI.” David Hite, associate professor of business and director of the Center for Free Enterprise and New Venture Creation at Tusculum, will conduct the session in the Brotherton Boardroom of the Meen Center.

This workshop is geared for anyone looking for a new job, preparing for a career change or trying to compete more effectively in today’s workforce. Participants will learn to use ChatGPT or Claude as their own personal job-search assistant. They should bring a laptop, an existing résumé or employment history and a job posting they would like to pursue.

We thank all of our faculty, staff and administrators, who are committed to the success of our students. These employees work one-on-one with them to help them become career-ready and join the workforce. Their tireless efforts produce results for our Pioneers.

If you enjoy performing theater outdoors in the fall, be sure to audition for a part in "Edgar Allan Poe and Other Haunted Stories in the Woods!

Auditions will be held today, Monday and Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Behan Arena Theatre, which is located on the lower level of Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center on campus. Anyone 13 and older is invited to showcase their skills.

“Poe” consists of six plays of about 10 minutes each in duration. Each one is performed six times, enabling the audience to see all of the plays. Anyone who auditions will participate in readings from the scripts.

No prior acting experience is necessary, so if you want to explore a potential interest in theater, you are encouraged to audition.

“Poe” will be performed Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Doak House Museum, with gates opening at 6 p.m.

Please join us as we observe the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Tusculum University, our Athletic Department and the Greeneville Flyboys will hold a ceremony Friday, Sept. 11, at Eastman Credit Union Field at Pioneer Park on Tusculum's campus.

The event will include remarks from Tusculum's president and an alumnus who was a student at the university on 9/11, when planes struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and another crashed in Pennsylvania. We will also hold a moment of silence and toll a bell at 8:46 a.m. followed by the climbing of 2,200 steps in Pioneer Park by anyone who is interested in that activity.

Gates will open at 7 a.m., and leaders will gather at 7:45 a.m. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. The event is open to the public. Admission is free.

Today was National College Colors Day. Tusculum's colors are orange and black, and many of our students, faculty and staff included them in their wardrobe today.

The College Licensing Company founded College Colors Day in 2004. We were delighted to play our part in the fun and look forward to participating in the future.

Tusculum University celebrated its 232nd birthday Thursday by holding Charter Day! We recognized this milestone during the Tusculum Family Reunion for faculty and staff members and during an evening event for the community and students.

People had an opportunity to view the charter for Greeneville College, a predecessor name for Tusculum. They also were able to talk to Dr. Peter Noll, professor of public history and museum studies, about the document and other aspects of the university's heritage.

We were delighted a special guest joined us. Shannon Minnick, a Greeneville resident, is the great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter of the Rev. Hezekiah Balch, founder and first president of Greeneville College. She learned from her mother about her connection to Balch and has conducted research on him. She plans to visit the Old College building, the oldest academic building on campus, to review some of the documents about Balch and the university.

Many of our students recently gathered to share the strengths of Tusculum in a 30-second spot that will air on high school football games on WJHL and on our website.

Our students talk about the many aspects that contribute to a great experience at Tusculum. They include hands-on learning and opportunities to meet students from around the world and to grow in one's faith.

The students who participated in the speaking parts were, in order, Levi Carson, Bryce Jackson, AnnaLee Simpson, Kayvon Pickett, John Ross and Zyere Norwood. Dr. Scott Hummel, Tusculum's president, concluded the spot.
