University of Georgia Griffin Campus The UGA Griffin Campus is one of the premier agricultural research centers in the region and is poise

For more than 100 years, the University of Georgia Griffin Campus has played a leading role in the development of modern agriculture in the South. The campus was first established as the Georgia Experiment Station in 1888 as a result of the federal Hatch Act. Early research focused on fertilizers and soil erosion, but soon a complete program of agricultural and environmental research developed. Gr

iffin scientists helped revolutionize agribusiness and farming statewide by solving many persistent crop problems. The deep-furrow method of planting winter oats, pioneered here around 1900, saved southern farmers millions of dollars. Researchers have bred numerous crop varieties, such as Empire cotton, which had major impact on Georgia cotton growers in the 1940s. Griffin scientist, Dr. Jasper Guy Woodroof, contributed greatly to early food science research by developing the technology for frozen foods.

YSP is flying by and it is hard to believe that we have reached the halfway point already! The students are working hard everyday learning all about their department and conducting research. We cannot wait to see their projects at the end of the program.

For last week’s Fun Friday we visited the Sensory Lab with Dr. Koushik Adhikari and learned how to conduct a sensory analysis. We got to participate in our own analysis sampling the smell of two different types of liquid smoke, the texture of gummy bears and the aroma and taste of chocolate. It was a fun visit to Dr. Adhikari’s lab!

Up next was our own version of Shark Tank where we made use of our collaborative, creativity and public speaking skills. Students were split into groups and learned they had been stranded on a deserted island that was surrounded by sharks. Their mission was to create a an original, never before seen product that the sharks would think is fin-tastic! The groups did a wonderful job creating some very interesting and useful items to aid in island life and please the sharks. Thankfully, everyone got a deal! Special thanks goes out to Misty Smith, Tracy Gauge and Jordan Stewart for serving as our Sharks! Videos of each groups pitch, will be in a separate post.
