Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine Welcome to the official page for the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston. MISSION: The Tilman J.

Fertitta Family College of Medicine is committed to improving the overall health and health care of the population of Greater Houston, Texas and beyond. At the Fertitta Family College of Medicine, our focus is on preventing and improving poor health — not simply treating it. Students receive the highest quality medical training to provide comprehensive health care. By teaching students to address

key factors that affect their patients' health — such as food insecurity, the environment and housing — we can help eliminate health disparities in our urban and rural areas. The future of medicine is here. Come help us shape a better tomorrow. Learn Why the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine is For You: https://uh.edu/medicine/

She remembered how lost she felt applying to medical school—and decided no one else should have to navigate it alone. 🤝

Meet Kaelie, an MS2 at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, whose passion for medicine has always been rooted in both science and connection.

She was initially drawn to medicine by her love of understanding how the human body works and solving the “puzzle” of disease. But after volunteering in a hospital, she discovered another part of medicine that mattered just as much: connecting with people during some of their most vulnerable moments. 🧩❤️

That same desire to connect with and support others inspired her to create Med Mentors through Cougar Med Ambassadors. When Kaelie was applying to medical school, navigating different curricula, exam styles and day-to-day realities left her searching for honest answers. Connecting with current students helped her most—so she built the program she once needed.

Now, 17 mentors lead monthly Q&A panels that give prospective students a real look at the curriculum, culture and student experience. The first panel received strong positive feedback, and Kaelie calls watching the program come to life “incredibly rewarding.” ✨

Beyond Med Mentors, Kaelie serves as president of the Suture Surgical Collaborative and works with Dr. Clemons on Type 2 diabetes research exploring its connection to Alzheimer’s disease.

And as she looks toward her future career, her goals remain centered on connection: making patients feel heard, valued and supported while mentoring others pursuing medicine.

📆 Next Med Mentors panel: Tuesday, September 8 | 5:30–6:30 p.m.

This is Women in Medicine in action—one student turning her own experience into a path forward for others.

Big news for diabetes research and prevention at the Humana Institute! 🩺❤️

Lola Adepoju, Ph.D., M.P.H., executive director of research at the Humana Integrated Health Sciences Institute and clinical professor, is leading a five-year study supported by a $3.8 million National Institutes of Health grant to explore whether continuous glucose monitors can help prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes among underserved populations.

The study will partner with federally qualified health centers and community organizations to expand access to this technology and support patients at risk for developing diabetes.

This research could help make diabetes prevention more accessible — and give patients greater insight into how everyday choices can affect their health.

Congratulations to Dr. Adepoju and the Humana Institute on this significant research achievement! 🐾

Research today, better care tomorrow. 🔬

This year’s projects at Student Research Day ranged from disease mechanisms and diagnostics to community engagement and clinical decision-making. Students presented their research through posters and oral presentations, engaging with faculty judges and the medical community for real-time feedback. 🗣️

Congratulations to this year’s award recipients (L to R):
🏆 Megha Bhatia — 1st place, Clinical Sciences, Used immersive virtual reality simulation to teach cultural humility, turning complex communication skills into practical learning experiences for future physicians.

🥈 Mihret Beregen — 2nd place, Clinical Sciences, Researched ways to better equip cancer survivors, patient advocates, and community members as partners in cancer research.

🥉 Aditya Vishnubhotla — 3rd place, Clinical Sciences, Worked to improve how partial ACL tears are evaluated on conventional MRI to support better clinical decision-making.

🥉 Taylor Carroll & Nithila Ganesh — 3rd place, Biomedical Sciences, Investigated whether different NSAIDs affect blood clotting based on COX-1 inhibition — with implications for safer pre-surgery options.

🥈 Cynthia Deem — 2nd place, Biomedical Sciences, Investigated how loss of hyaluronan in the limbal stem cell niche leads to a decline in limbal epithelial stem cells, with implications for corneal health and regeneration.

🏆 Kaelie Zelms — 1st place, Biomedical Sciences, Explored how amylin affects nitric oxide signaling and its role in the type 2 diabetes process.

These projects reflect the kind of thoughtful, patient-centered inquiry that will shape our students as future physicians.

Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their research. Your curiosity and dedication inspire us all. 🩺
