We’re thrilled to announce that Daniel Cohen, Ph.D., has been awarded the 2026 Master of Interdisciplinary Studies John Freeman Faculty Teaching Award! Named in honor of John W. Freeman, this award celebrates excellence in interdisciplinary teaching and mentorship.

Cohen’s course, Human Rights and World Affairs, exemplifies the intellectually rigorous and thought-provoking learning that defines the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies program. As one student shared, “Cohen’s teaching challenges students to examine complex issues from multiple perspectives and engage deeply with difficult questions.”

Cohen was recognized at the Rice University Faculty Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. Congratulations to Cohen on this well-deserved recognition! 🎉

Meet Casey Schoenberger, Ph.D., who joins the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies program this semester to teach East Asian Literature in Translation. His expertise in regional literary traditions and dietary culture shapes the way he connects everyday topics, including tea and cuisine, to broader questions of globalization, philosophy and cultural identity.
